Collection Overview

Biography / History
J.H. Cunningham & Co. was a general store operated in Springfield, Kentucky. From 1831-1832, J.H. Cunningham and Giles Smith operated the store in a partnership. In 1842, the estate of Giles Smith sued J.H. Cunningham for a share in the profits of the firm from this time period. Cunningham alleged that the firm was not profitable during the time Smith was his partner.
Scope and Content
The J.H. Cunningham & Company ledgers (dated 1827-1844; 1 cubic foot; 2 items) consist of two ledgers documenting the operation of the J.H. Cunningham Company, a general merchandise store, in Springfield, Kentucky. The ledgers record accounts by customer and date. The books track goods purchased, debts paid, residence, guardianships, and race. African-American customers are noted with "blk." in parentheses next to the customer name.
