- Biography / History
- St. Rose Priory is a house of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church located near Springfield, Kentucky. The priory was founded in 1808 originally as St. Thomas College. The college closed in 1828, but the priory continued with an educational role as a seminary. The current Church of St. Rose was built in 1854 and still stands. Many of the buildings, including the college and old novitiate, were torn down in 1978.
- Scope and Content
- St. Rose Priory, Springfield, Kentucky photograph album (dated 1939-1940; 0.27 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of a photograph album depicting the education and ordination of Catholic priests, including photographs of St. Rose Priory, Springfield, Kentucky. The album contains approximately 130 black and white photographic images of varying sizes. Mostly, these are candid photographs of the life of young aspirants to the Catholic priesthood. The first section, identified only as Providence June 1939, shows as a school commencement preparation, graduation ceremonies, and faculty and family interactions for 8 male graduates of an institution of higher learning. The rest of the album is identified as "Life Begins Anew August 1939 St. Rose's Priory" (Kentucky) with photographs of the gradual process of ordination in 1940 for a group of young men.. The photograph album also includes photographs of the Priory grounds and building.
