KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY.

HISTORY.

Kentucky University was chartered January 16, 1858; it is
the legal successor of Bacon College, which was chartered Feb-
ruary 23, 1837. The latter having been suspended £01 want of
means, l\’Ir. I. B. Bowman, an alumnus the1eof, actmg with the
sanction of its Boa1d of Trustees, undeitook its full endowment '
and its enlaigement to the dimensions of a complete University.
Seconded by the efforts of the late James Taylor, of lVIercer
county, Ky., who secured in that county a very liberal subscrip-
' tion to the work, 1\I1'. Bowman prosecuted his labors with great
success, and the Collegiate Department of the new institution,
which bore the title ot Kentucky University, was opened at
Harmdsbulg, Ky, Septembe1 19, 1859.

On the destruction of its building by fire, in February, 1864,
negotiations were opened with the Trustees of Transylvania Uni-
versity, at Lexington, for its removal to that city, and for a union
of the interests of the two institutions. This union was effected
by act of the Legislature, approved February 28, 1865, and the
consolidated institution, bearing the corporate name of Kentucky
University,w was opened at Lexington, October 2, 1865. Under
the re-organization then ellected, three departments existed, the
College ot Arts, the College of the Bible, and the College of Law.

One year thereafter, October I, 1866, a fourth department~—the
Agricultural and l‘v/Iechanical College of Kentucky—was opened,
under the provisions of an act of the Legislature, approved Feb-
ruary 22, 1865. This act provided that after the consolidation of
Kentucky University and Transylvania University, the Agricul-
tural and Nlechanical College of Kentucky should be one of the
Colleges of the consolidated institution. One year later, Octo-
be1 7, 1867, a fifth department—~the Com111ercial College——was
opened

By an act of the Legislature, approved March 13, 1878, the Agri-
cultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky was detached From

Kentucky University, and made an independent State College.
By contract, dated July 5, 1878, the same is to remain for two
years on the grounds of the University, occupying the sameibufld-
ings as heretofore, the State College and Kentucky University
working in harmony.

LOCATION.

The College of Arts and the College of the Bible occupy the
Transylvania grounds and buildings, in the city ofLexington, Kym,
the College of Law and the Commercial College, other rooms in
the city; while a portion of the combined estates of Woodland
and Ashland——the homestead of Henry Clay—~is occupied by the
State Agriciultural and lVIechanical College.

The city, containing about 20,000 inhabitants, is located in the
midst of the far-firmed Bluegrass region of Kentucky, and is noted
for its healthfulness and its superior social and religious influences,
affording to students, who can board in the best private families,
most favorable advantages for cultureyand refinement.

It is easily accessible by two daily trains from Louisville, two
from hiaysville, and four from Cincinnati, each city less than 100
miles distant; and it is expected to be soon in more direct commu-
nication with the East, via the Chesapeake 8: Ohio Railroad, and
with the South by the completion of the Cincinnati Southern
Road to Chattanooga.

ORGANIZATION.

Kentucky University embraces several colleges, each under the
immediate government of its own faculty and presiding officer.
The general supervision of the University as a whole is committed
to the President, who is ex-oficz'o Presiding oflicer of the College
of Arts. It is his duty, in connection with the Executive Com-
mittee, to see that the general laws and statutes of the University
are faithfully executed.

Each college is divided into several schools or departments of
study; and each school is under the immediate government and

instruction of a competent Professor, assisted, when necessary, by

GOVERNMENT.

The general government of the University is vested in the Board
of Curators, which consists of notless than thirty members, repre-
senting the donors, under the conditions prescribed in the charter.
The delegated and representative powers of the corporation are
vested in the Executive Committee.

For purposes of counsel and co-operation in regard to the gen-
eral interests of the University, the faculties of the several colleges
assemble as one body, under the name of the Senate of the Uni-
versity; but the immediate government of the students of each
college is committed to the faculty thereof, each student being
amenable to the faculty of that college to which he belongs by
Virtue of his matriculation.

MATRICULATION.

A student, upon his arrival at Lexington, will report promptly
to the President, with his testimonials of character and standing.
He Will, as early as practicable, secure suitable boarding. Unne-
cessary delay in either of these respects may bar his admission.

After successful examination and payment of fees, he will, upon
reading a copy of the laws, be entitled to matriculate upon sign-

ing the following declaration: “I enter the University with a
sincere desire to enjoy the benefits of its instruction, and with a. '

determined resolution to conform to its laws.”

The number of recitations of each student must, in general, be
512766 daily. Iv’Iore can often be profitably attended; less may be
permitted, if circumstances require.
