Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Mary Frances Jewell McVey was born in Berry, Harrison County, Kentucky on December 23, 1889. She was the second child and only daughter of Asa Hickman Jewell (1857-1937) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sayre Berry Jewell (1861-1941). Her older brother was John Berry Jewell (1886-1946), and the younger was Robert "Bob" Berry Jewell (1896-1986).
- By 1900, the Jewell family was living in Lexington, Ky. There Frances attended Sayre School before going to the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Penn. in 1907. She graduated in 1909, and attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. from 1909-1913. In 1915, she began teaching English at State University, Lexington, Ky. which became the University of Kentucky in 1916. She taught English there from 1915 to 1921. From 1917-1918 she attended Columbia University in New York, N.Y., where she received her Master of Arts in English Literature.
- From 1921-1923 she was Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky. She resigned this position in 1923 when she married Dr. Frank LeRond McVey, president of the University. She was actively involved in promoting the University during the 1920s and 1930s and was well-known for entertaining at the University President's home, Maxwell Place. She also continued to devote herself to improving social conditions and providing opportunities for the less fortunate through her service to the YWCA, The Frontier Nursing Service, the International Club, the University of Kentucky Women's Club, and the Lexington Junior League. She also served as an alumna member on the Vassar Board of Trustees. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Kentucky in 1940.
- She died at her home on June 13, 1945, of metastatic lung cancer, and was buried at Lexington Cemetery.
- Other Jewell and Berry family members are represented in this collection. An incomplete genealogy follows.
- John M[oses] Jewell (1776-1853) married Ann McCarty (1780-1823). They lived primarily in and around Jessamine County, Ky. They had nine children, one of whom is represented in this collection, John L. Jewell, who often signed himself John Jewell, Jr. John L. Jewell (1812-1882) was the father of Asa Hickman Jewell and grandfather of Frances Jewell McVey. His third wife was Mary F.Tillett Reed (1835-1909), a widow of 20 years of age, and mother to Marianne "Dolly" Reed (1852-1938). Mary was the mother of Asa Hickman Jewell and Nannie W. Jewell Embry (1860-1947). Nannie was the mother of Dorothy Hawkins Embry (1888-1985), Minerva Jewell Embry (1886-?), and Talton H. Embry (1894-?).
- Berry family: John M[ichael] Berry (1830-1892) married Louisa Cass Dawson (1836-1922) from Pennsylvania. They lived primarily in Berry, Harrison County, Ky. They had seven children, including Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sayre Berry Jewell. Another child was Eva G. Berry Cromwell (1865-1929), wife of John Cromwell (1862-1951) of Cynthiana, Ky., and mother of Louise (1889- ?) and Belle Cromwell (1890-1962).
- Jewell-Berry family: Asa Hickman Jewell (1857-1937) married Elizabeth Lizzie Sayre Berry Jewell (1861-1941). They lived primarily in Lexington, Fayette County, Ky. They had three children, John Berry Jewell, Mary Frances Jewell McVey, and Robert Bob Berry Jewell.
- John Berry Jewell (1886-1946) married Mary Henderson Worthington (1887-1948) in 1909. John lived most of his life in either Jessamine County, Ky. or Fayette County, Ky. He worked as a farmer and was an independent tobacco warehouse owner both in Lexington, Ky. and Franklin, Tenn.
- Robert Berry Jewell (1896-1986) married Margaret McClure Elliott (1905-1984), sometime in 1942. He lived most of his life in Jessamine County, Ky. and Lexington, Fayette County, Ky.

- The Jewell family papers (1814-1984; 17.7 cubic feet, 46 boxes) consist of correspondence, school-related papers, and ephemera and artifacts relating to Frances Jewell McVey and her family, the Jewell family of Lexington, Ky., Jessamine County, Ky., and Berry, Ky.
- Frances Jewell McVey's series comprises the bulk of the papers and include her personal, business, and civic interests and connections. Her correspondence with family and friends particularly documents her youth and young adult years. The bulk of the incoming letters were written by her mother, Lizzie Berry Jewell (1904-1924 and undated) and close friends from Lexington, Ky. (1903-1937 and undated), the Baldwin School (1908-1917 and undated) and Vassar College (1909-1913). Frances' letters to her mother (1907-1913) and brother (1908) during her years at boarding school and college are also present in the series. Indexes and subject headings to Frances Jewell McVey and Lizzie Berry Jewell's correspondence (undated) are included in the collection. Other incoming letters include those sent to Frances by fiance and husband, Frank LeRond McVey, during their courtship and early marriage (1922-1924); letters from "Bob C.," stationed in France and England during World War I (1917-1920); and a few brief notes from former State University, Lexington, Kentucky (later University of Kentucky) president James Kennedy Patterson (1916-1919). An outgoing letter written from Frances to Dr. Edward O. Guerrant at age twelve is one of the earliest items in the collection and provides an early view of her interest in being of service to others. There are also travel souvenirs, postcards (including ones made from leather), and multiple drafts and proof copies of the book, Uncle Will of Wildwood (1974), co-authored by Robert Berry Jewell and Frances Jewell McVey (1939-1974 and undated).
- Jewell family businesses and financial activities (1810s-1980s), particularly Robert Berry Jewell's involvement with standard bred horse breeding and racing (1909-1982), are documented throughout the collection through clippings; correspondence; farm, farm products, livestock; household accounts and catalogs; estate records; a land indenture, and photographs of horses. Included in the business records is a listing of slave lots and the names of those they were allotted to (undated, [after 1855]), including the name James Jewell, as well as a letter from Ty Cobb to Robert Jewell (1940).
- The collection also includes Asa Hickman Jewell's school essays and report cards from Forest Academy (near Louisville, Ky., 1873?-1874) and Central University (Richmond, Ky., 1875-1878?), as well as his travel journal from a 1910 voyage to Europe. Other family members represented in the collection include John Michael Berry, James Jewell, John Berry Jewell, John Moses Jewell, John L. Jewell, and Marianne "Dolly" Reed. The ephemera includes a bawdy poem (1961) written on the occasion of the destruction of Belle Brezing's house in Lexington, Ky. where she operated a brothel.

Comprised primarily of incoming correspondence to Mary Frances Jewell McVey (1889-1945) from friends, family, and business, civic, and charitable organizations (1902-1942). Also includes a few outgoing letters from Frances to family and friends, including a letter written at age 12. Major correspondents include mother Lizzie Berry Jewell, close school friends from The Baldwin School (Bryn Mawr, Penn.) and Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and close friends from the Lexington area. Also contains letters and drawings sent to Frances by Frank LeRond McVey during their courtship and throughout their marriage (1922-1935). There are also letters written from France and England during World War I to Frances from "Bob C.," a friend from likely the Lexington area (1917-1920). Major topics in the correspondence include family news, local happenings, and advice from family members. Frances' personal, school, business, and philanthropic activities are also documented through travel diaries, scrapbooks, yearbooks, schoolwork and writings, and newspaper clippings. Includes a letter from the president of the University of Illinois inviting Frances to apply for the Dean of Women position there; a letter of resolution from the Vassar College Board of Trustees commending Frances' for her service to the college and the Board, dated 1941; a letter and pamphlets written by Dr. Edward O. Guerrant for missionary outreach; and a letter from the matron of Kentucky Houses of Reform, "White Girls Division," dated 1914. Other correspondents include the American Red Cross, The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), the Kentucky Child Labor Association, and the Kentucky Female Orphan School. Also includes a certificate naming Frances as Chairman of the Precinct Committee in 1920; an invitation to speak at a Wilmore P.T.A. meeting; and an invitation to tea at the University of Kentucky library.

Comprised of cards, postcards and letters written to Frances from school classmates, friends from the Lexington, Ky. area, and friends and acquaintances met through mutual friends and travel. There are also a few outgoing letters written by Frances, including a 1902 letter to Dr. Edward O. Guerrant documenting Frances' early interest in being a missionary in the mountains. The bulk of the incoming correspondence comes from classmates from The Baldwin School (Bryn Mawr, Penn.) and Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), especially Ellen Coleman DuPont, Christina Browning Fisher, Martha Lukens Gibbons, and Marian Irwin. Baldwin School classmate Gibbons used the terms "thee" and "thou" routinely in her letters and may have been a Quaker. Prolific correspondents from the Lexington, Ky. area include Lulie E. Logan, Mary Frazer Lancaster, and Josephine E. Farrell. Also included are letters written to Frances between 1917 to 1920 from "Bob C.," a Lexington acquaintance who was in the military and stationed in England and France during World War I. There are also brief notes from James Kennedy Patterson, President Emeritus of what was then referred to as State College, later known as University of Kentucky, written to Frances during her employment at the University. This subseries includes lists of party invitations hosted by the McVeys during Frank McVey's time as President of the University of Kentucky.

Also contains a letter written in 1913, addressed to "Dearest Love." There is a reasonable chance that this was written to Lilias Wheeler, as there is a long letter in a similar tone in Lilias' folder to Frances. The letter to Dr. Guerrant, a pioneer missionary in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, is the earliest dated item in Frances Jewell's correspondence. Twelve year old Frances states that she is the secretary of a "little home missionary society" that would like to sponsor a mountain girl to school. She also states that she plans to become a missionary in the mountains someday.

Comprised of small diaries, scrapbooks, a memory book, a "Thumbograph "(autograph) book, and non-school-related writings by Frances. Also included are newspaper clippings, mostly pertaining to herself and loved ones; wedding, travel and events memorabilia; and a radio broadcast transcription of "Shakers in Kentucky." Many of the diaries are short travel journals from trips to resorts, the coast, or to visit friends and relatives (1904-1907). The scrapbooks and memory books contain primarily newspaper and magazine clippings meant to improve the mind or inspire reflection. Her wedding service book and some wedding souvenirs are included. Writings about Kentucky are represented, including a typed booklet of Frances' favorite recipes. There is also a travel itinerary and her Vatican pass from her trip to Europe following her graduation from The Baldwin School (1910). A "Thumbograph" book is included, where signatures and thumbprints could be collected, much like an autograph book.

List likely compiled sometime after 1855, and before 1865. The name, age, marital status, and monetary value of the individual slave is listed, as well as the names of those "allotted" the slaves.

The stub has written on it, "Interloper, Nov 10 1969" and "bought by Syndicate." The sale company was the Blooded Horse Sales Co. Arranged chronologically.
