Collection Overview

Biography / History
Edward Morton LeGrand (1807-1857) was born in France to Abner LeGrand (d. 1862) and Jane Rogers Morton LeGrand (1787-1859) and immigrated to the United States in 1827. LeGrand lived in Lexington, Kentucky, and in Desha County, Arkansas. LeGrand was killed by a plantation overseer in Arkansas, but was buried in Lexington with his siblings Jane Nash LeGrand Higgins (1819-1854), Elizabeth West LeGrand Keene (1822-1846) and Julia Richardson LeGrand Elliott (1825-1900). Edward Morton LeGrand never married.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Edward Morton LeGrand letter book (dated 1825-1837; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 item) comprises a single letter book that features newspaper clippings, business records, and letters written and collected by Lexington business man, Edward Morton LeGrand. The newspaper clippings share common themes such as; marriage, local deaths in Lexington, Christianity, social etiquette, and short stories. The business records and letters in this book detail on delivery instructions, trade in New Orleans, and prices. There are a few personal letters in the back of the book, and these letters are written to friends living in Lexington and discuss the weather, crops, and overall health.
