Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Kentucky Association for the Improvement of the Breeds of Stock was formed in 1826 to promote the breeding and racing of Thoroughbred horses in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. It began holding racing meets in the fall of 1826 and constructed a track in Lexington, Ky., in 1828. Races were held, with only a few interruptions, until 1933. After the demise of the Kentucky Association, the Keeneland Association was formed in 1935 and built a new racetrack, then six miles from the Lexington city limits.
- Scope and Content
- The Kentucky Association for the Improvement of the Breeds of Stock records include articles of incorporation, board meeting minutes, deeds, subscription lists, race meet schedules, purses, nominations for races, and rules and regulations for the operation of the track. There are also pedigree records for stock and records of stock purchased from the Shakers at Pleasant Hill, Ky.
