An adjustable rope halter is a very desirable
item to have around your farm. A very inexpensive
and useful halter can be made from an ordinary l/2.
_ inch rope.
Twelve feet of 1/2`inch rope will make a halter
that can be used on lar ge r he ife r s as well as on
smaller ones.
First, wrap the end of the rope with twine so
_that it will not unravel. This is called whipping and
is usually the easiest way to finish the ends of halter
ropes. Secure a piece of string about 3 feet long and
place it on the rope allowing the end (a) (see Fig. 1)
to hang loosely over the end of the rope about 2 in-
ches. Now make a loop by passing the other end of _
the string (b) down the rope and allowing a loose end

of 2 inches. Grasp the rope with the left hand in such
amanner that the thumb can be placed on both strings han
as at (x) in Fig. 1. Then, with the right hand, grasp sho
the loop of the string at (y) and wrap it down the rope str:
over itself and the other strand as in Fig. 2. Start long
wrapping about 1/2 inch from the end of the rope. loo]
Continue wrapping, firmly and closely, as far as eno·
de sir e d (1 1/2 inch or more) then draw up the loop 1ift·
and tighten the tie by pulling on both ends "a" and "b" ` end
(Fig. 3). Cut the ends "a" and "b" adjacent to the a rz
wr apping and when finished, it should appear as in sho;

After the ends of the rope have been wrapped —
to prevent unraveling, you are ready to proceed with
making the halter. To form the loop splice or eye, 1
measure 17 inches from one end of the rope and bend
the short end back parallel with the long rope.
2

L Hold the bend of the rope in the palm of the left
; hand with both ends extending away from you and the
, short end on the left side of the long end. Lift two
, strands of the short end at (a) in Fig. 5 and ru.n the
[ long end (I) under the two strands and pull up so the
_ loop (b) is of the desired size. Make the loop large
; enough so the rope can easily pass through it. Next-
, lift two strands of the long end at (c) and run the short
nv end (II) under these two strands and pull it through at
3 a right angle as in Fig. 6 and Fig. 7a. When the i
1 shortend has been pulled through tightly, the finished
product should look as Fig. 7b. There should be 8to
12 inches of the short end of the rope extending past
\\ the loop.

The remainder of the halter is formed by un-
twisting the rope about 3 inches from the short end.
Untwist until a loop is formed in each individual
strand of the‘rope as shown in Fig. 8. Keep twisting ‘
until all three loops are in line‘down the rope as in
Fig. 9. Point both ends of the rope in the same direc-
tion and run the long end through all three loops and
pull it down to the desired size for the calf‘s head.
Run the long end thr ough the "eye" to for m the
finished halter as in Fig. l0.
