- Biography / History
- Joseph A. Altsheler was born in 1868 and died in 1919. During his lifetime, he was an author of popular juvenile historical fiction, writing many books about the American Civil War, the French and Indian Wars, World War I and he also wrote fiction stories about the west. He began his career working at the Louisville newspaper the Couier-Journal. In 1892 he began working at the New York World newspaper and became the newspaper's first Hawaii correspondent. Due to a lack of stories, Altsheler began writing children’s fiction.
