- William Henry Harrison Carpenter (1842-1923) was born in Pennsylvania to William T. Carpenter and Sarah C. Carpenter. In 1862, Carpenter enlisted in the Union Army, serving in Company C of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry; he was discharged in early 1863. He then went on to marry Louise R. (1837-1908), and together the couple had two children – Ella and Ada.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The William Henry Harrison Carpenter letters (dated 1862, undated; 0.014 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise letters to Carpenter's aunt, uncle, and sister that document his time serving in the Union Army during the Civil War in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Carpenter writes mainly to his aunt and uncle, describing his experiences in Camp Alabama, moving down the railway to Louisville, Kentucky, his duties as part of the Cavalry, and interactions with other soldiers and officers. He also writes about running into friends while in Camp Alabama, getting his uniform fixed, needing money to purchase goods and clothes, and the cavalry's preparations to move to Nashville. There is one letter to his sister in which he writes about a thunderstorm he experienced while in camp and how it flooded most of his tent along with how the men interact after their daily duties are done.
- The William Henry Harrison Carpenter letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
