- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. - Scope and Content
- The Stephen Hulfish letters (dated 1914-1919; 0.11 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprises letters from Stephen sent to his girlfriend that document his experiences at a training camp in California and later deployment to France during World War I. In the letters, Steve writes about his duties in the camp, running into friends, the weather in California, going to San Francisco and San Jose, training they are required to complete, and getting specialized training for messenger pigeons. He also writes about his desire to return to Indiana, news from his parents, and how much he misses his girlfriend. Once in France, he writes about the conditions of the camp they are in, the weather, when he might be coming home, and thoughts on French and black soldiers. Additionally, there is one letter in the collection from his girlfriend that talks about the weather and her personal health.
- The Stephen Hulfish letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
