- Biography / History
- Satire of the managers of the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane - Robert Wilks, Colley Cibber, and Barton Booth - for their attempts at imitating the popular Harlequin entertainments of theatrical manager John Rich at his Lincoln Inn Fields theater. In particular Hogarth is focused on their recent pantomime Harlequin Sheppard, based on the life and death of criminal Jack Sheppard, using the Drury Lane stage (complete with its motto "Vivitur Ingenio" above the stage) with the scene as Newgate prison.

- The caption below the engraving reads: "This Print Represents the Rehearsing a new Farce that will include the two famous Entertainments Dr Faustus & Harlequin Shepherd to which will be added Scaramouch Jack Hall the Chimney-Sweeper's Escape from Newgate through the privy, with the comical humours of Ben Johnson's Ghost, concluding with the Hay-Dance perform'd in it as the Ignorant imagine. The Bricks, Rubbish &c. will be real, but the Excrements upon Jack Hall will be made of Chew'd Gingerbread to prevent Offence. Vivat Rex. Price six pence."
