- Biography / History
- The Green Line System, whose corporate title was the Cincinnati, Newport and Covington Transportation Company, was an amalgamation of several northern Kentucky street railways which served the northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area beginning in 1876. The company also acquired the Dixie Traction Company which operated buses, cars, and limousines. The name of the parent company changed several times; it was first called the South Covington and Cincinnati Street Railway Company, and then named the Cincinnati, Newport and Covington Railway Company until 1955. David Leer Ringo served as president of the corporation, chairman of the board and as chief executive officer from 1950 until the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) took over the system in the early 1970s.
- Scope and Content
- These are documents, records, and photographs of the Green Line System, an amalgamation of traction companies which served the northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area since 1876. The collection is in four parts (1) historical records (1897-1965) which include reports, clippings, correspondence, chronologies and company seals for several street railroads known corporately since 1955 as the Cincinnati, Newport and Covington Transportation Company. Also included is a speech (ca. 1923) by public utility magnate Samuel Insull. (2) A 13-year run of the in-house company newsletter, THE GREENLINER spanning from Aug. 1945 to Jan 1958. (3) Union/company agreements (1932-1960) are contained in 13 pamphlets. (4) Over 3,300 photographs depicting various forms of transportation (streetcars, trolleys, buses, and limousines), company personnel and buildings.
- The collection includes photographs of the 1933, 1936 and 1937 Ohio River floods in the Cincinnati area, and views of the Greater Cincinnati Airport site before construction. A photograph of A. B. "Happy" Chandler and Dizzy Dean is signed by both men. Recently acquired materials provide information on TANK (Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky) and ATE Management and Service Company which now operate the transit industry in northern Kentucky.
