PREFACE

i The Inventory of Federal Archives }¤.j@e_Sja}p§ is one of the
Q pr0dwctE'FT.€Eb” $%6b}a14Archivss, which operated
* as a nati¤n—wids project of the Works Progress Administration from
January 1, 1956 to June $0, l9Z7, and has been continued in Louisiana
since that date as a state project of that Administration and of the
Wbrk Projects Administration with Louisiana State University as its
{ local sp¤ns0r.
E The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows:
i Series I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey,
[ acknowledgments, and general discussi0ns·0f the location, condition,
{ and content of federal archives in the states. Succeeding series
g contaia the detailed informatinw secured by workers of the Survey, in
L inven"=ry form, a separate series number being assigned to each of the
i executive departments (except the Department of State) and other major
units of the Federal Government. Within each series N0. l is a gan-
eral introduction to tho field organization and records of the govern-
mental agency concerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory
proper, separate numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical
ordcr. Thus in each series, the invcntrry for Alabama is V0, 2, that
for Arizona N0. 5, that for Arkansas No. h, ctc.
For each local office information regarding nach series, or unit
of related records, is presented in thc following ordmrz title, in-
clusive dates ("to date" indicating an open file at the time the in-
formation was scoured), general description of informational content,
description of thc system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement
of frccucncy and purpose nf usc, form ¤f thc record itself (bound v01-
umcs, sheets in folders, etc.), linear footage, doscriptirn of thc c¤n-
talncrs, physical condition of thc records (not stated if satisfactory),
location by room number or other identifying information, and finally,
the number of the Form GBSA on which this information was originally
recorded by a Survey worker and from which it was abstracted for tho
Inventory. This form is 0m file in The National Archivgs. When it
contains substantial information on addenda sheets which has not been
included in thc mimcographed abstract, indication 0f this is given by
usc of the reference "Scc nddcnd¤»"
In Tcnn0~scc the work of thc Survey wns under the dircctirn of
Judge Samuel C. Williams with Kr. Lowe Watkins, who lntnr succeeded him
‘ as director, as his assistant, In May 19§7, Tcnncsscc vms added to the
region under thc dirccticn of Mr. Stanley C. Arthur of New Orleans, La.,
with Nr. John S. lutcn as state supervisor. This Inventory of the records
of thc Department of thc Interior in Tcnncsscc was prepared in thc New
Orleans office of the Survey undcr the direction of Mrs. Norris B.
