Lexington, Ky. page five AC Welcome to the second annual University of Kentucky Invitational Basketball Tournament. It is always a very real pleasure to welcome friends of the University from throughout the state and athletics fans from many other areas and invite them to take the time to look about our beautiful campus during their visit. Hundreds of thousands of persons visit the University of Kentucky each year for athletics events, concerts, lectures, conventions and other programs. I sincerely believe that you, like others before you, will find our campus an interesting and friendly place. We also wish to extend a sportsman-like welcome tonight to the fine basketball teams, and their followers, from LaSalle College, Southern California, and University of Utah. I trust that they will receive our utmost respect, courtesy and hospitality. May we always bear in mind the sacrifices of those to whose memory this Coliseum is dedicated and pledge ourselves to a standard of conduct worthy of these honored dead. H. L. A FIRE POWER WHERE YOU SEE THESE SIGNS... page nine Holiday Cage Festival The University of Kentucky Invitational Basketball Tournament represents an attempt to provide athletics patrons with cage competition of the highest calibre and re-express the ideal of an abiding faith in the value of intercollegiate athletics as an instrument in promoting friendly relations. Selection of the teams to take part in the annual tourney is based on considerations of national reputation in cage circles, potential calibre of play expected and the desire to give the holiday meet an inter-sectional flavor with a top team representing various parts of the country. The tournament originated a year ago as the result of an increasingly-popular trend toward the scheduling of holiday tournaments and round-robin meets in college-controlled arenas and the UKIT is the first tournament of a national scope ever presented in Lexington. The inaugural two-night, four-team tournament last year, played before capacity audiences, saw host Kentucky smash LaSalle, 73-60, for the championship and UCLA take the consolation title from Duke. The stellar lineup of four of the nation's top cage powers participating in the 1954 Kentucky tournament surpasses in calibre virtually every other basketball tournament held since the Olympic Trials of 1948 due to the prospect of a rematch between Kentucky and LaSalle a "dream game" that would pair off the defending undefeated national champion Wildcats against the 1954 NCAA Tournament Champion Explorers in a tilt that could virtually decide this season's collegiate title. Both of the other teams in this year's U.K. Invitational also are ranked high in the national polls. Utah, the Skyline Conference powerhouse that furnishes Kentucky's opening night opposition, is placed 13th in the United Press rankings and 15th in the poll conducted by the Associated Press. Southern California's "darkhorse" Trojans, initial opponent of LaSalle, rates 15th in the UP list and just out of the top 20 on the AP chart. page ten Gayle Rose, Jerry Bird, Bob Burrow, Coach Adolph Rupp, Phil Grawemeyer, Bill Evans, and Linville Puck UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY ROSTER No. Name Pos.
