Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Richmond and Louisville Railroad Company was formed on January 30, 1882 when the Richmond and Southwestern Railway Company merged with the Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio Narrow Gauge Railroad.
- Scope and Content
- This collection consists of records relating to the early history of the Richmond and Louisville Railroad Company. The larger portion of the collection is made up of technical documents such as records of deeds, level books, and transit books from the company's formative years. These records provide such information as the names of property owners, place names, topographical notes and limited descriptions of local economies. In addition, the railroad records include important organizational and financial documents such as the minutes from meetings of shareholders and the Board of Directors, and a paymaster's book detailing payrolls, expenses and accounts paid.
- Some of the geographic areas represented include deeds from Smyth, Bland and Tazewell Counties in southwest Virginia. A map of the railroad shows the connection of railroads of Virginia with the railroads of Kentucky on "the shortest route east and west from the Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic Ocean" (1882).
