Abortion decision surprises legal scholars

Monday‘s US. Supreme Court
decision affirming the constitu-
tional right to abortion represents
a surprising search for balance on
an issue that has deeply polarized
the nation, a UK law professor
said.

Although the decision opens
the door for more state regulation
of abortions, Carolyn Bratt said
the verdict was not the fatal blow
many legal scholars had expected
for pro-choice advocates.

The court had been expected to
use the case —— which involved a
restrictive Pennsylvania abortion
law - to overtum Roe vs. Wade,
a landmark 1973 ruling that le-
galized most abortions.
