Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Weil and Mickler families were prominent figures in the Kentucky livestock industry. Jay D. Weil (1894-1959) moved to Kentucky at age six, where he lived under the guidance of his father, a livestock agent. As he aged, Jay followed in his father's footsteps, working as a livestock agent. It was through his work that he was able to expand his horizons and eventually come to own a number of farms such as Briar Hill and Golden Chance, as well as his own store furnished specifically to aid those dealing in livestock. This store, originally called the Blue Grass Drug Company was, in conjunction with its neighboring establishment Livestock Health and Supplies, founded in 1949 by a group of agricultural businessmen. Jay D. Weil and his son-in-law Robert Mickler numbered among these men, joined together by the goal of creating a one-stop-shop for farmers of crops and livestock. In 1960 there was a merger between Livestock Health and Supplies with Consolidated Chemical of Sandusky, Ohio, who in 1963 were in turn sold to the Grower Service Corporation. In 1969 the store came back into Robert Mickler's hands after being purchased from the Grower Service Corp. Mickler then changed its name to "Bob Mickler's Livestock Health and Supplies". In 1974, the shop once again changed its name, this time shortening it to "Bob Mickler's". In addition to their dedication to the store, the Weil/Mickler family also took interest in horses and equestrian activities themselves, breeding and racing a number of champions as well as creating organizations and community events based in and around the creatures. One such event, the Post Time Show, became widely regarded as one of the best small-time horse shows in the country.

Weil family papers (1903-2020, undated; 5.06 cubic feet; 15 boxes; 303 MB; 7 digital files) consist of genealogical files for the Weil family of Lexington, Kentucky, as well as information on their various general and feed stores. Includes information on both the Weil and the Mickler family, including family trees and other geneaological records, as well as their (Weil and Mickler's) stores leading up to Bob Mickler's Lifestyle & Performance Riding Apparel on West High Street. Photographs of the evolution of the store on West High Street as well as horses bred/trained/raced by the family are present. Also includes various promotional products distributed by Bob Mickler's, a VHS, cassette, and CD records of various commerical runs, races recorded, and music.
