- Biography / History
- George M. Uttinger was a carpenter and builder in Lexington, Kentucky, operating his own business from a shop on Third Street.
- Uttinger was born circa 1833 in Kentucky, and was buried September 11, 1902, in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky. He and his wife Nancy Ellen had at least seven children, one of whom (John, born 1866) scribbled his name and other writings and drawings (including the year 1880) in one of his father's account books.

- Scope and Content
- These account books belonged to George M. Uttinger, ranging from 1859-1864, with some instances and entries from 1871, 1880, 1882, and 1886. Uttinger used these books to keep track of the finances for his carpentry business. In the table of contents the names of customers are listed in alphabetical order along with a page number. The books contain notes about what kinds of services Uttinger performed or parts and products bought, along with a running ledger of the finances involved with that particular customer. Additionally, they include mathematical calculations, simple drawings, and sketches of building plans. The first account book primarily uses the business name Hulett & Uttinger, or Hulett and Co., referring to Uttinger's business partner prior to 1860, David Hulett. Uttinger's son, John Uttinger used much of the empty space in the first book for writing and recordkeeping practice.
