- Biography / History
- Organized in 1920 to help stimulate research activities at UK, the Kentucky Research Club membership was open to those University officers and instructors who had made meritorious research contributions exclusive of those offered for advanced degree requirements. Continued research activity was a further obligation of members. The Research Club’s basic function, service as a forum for reporting on projects undertaken by members, remained constant throughout the period until membership voted to disband in 1965 due to poor attendance at meetings. This was attributed to increasing scientific specialization resulting in the necessary over-simplification in presentations made before the members and a correspondent decline in the value thereof.
- Scope and Content
- The Kentucky Research Club records include meeting minutes, fragmentary correspondence, and published bulletins of the club, organized in 1920 to help stimulate research activities at UK. Materials are comprised of a bound series of meeting minutes (1920-1936), loose minutes with related correspondence (1942-1952), published club bulletins (various years), and a file of memos polling members about their attitudes toward club activities (1965). These memos led to the disbanding of the club. Frequently found with the letters are reports on research or abstracts made of speeches delivered during meetings. Loose minutes sometimes include correspondence of club members or officers. Executive committee minutes are interfiled with regular minutes. All minutes may not be present. Records in general detail areas of research interest at the University and the level of competence at which such research was undertaken.
