Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Thomas Lyne IV (1783-1848), the son of Thomas (III) and Mary Pagit Lyne of Loudon County, Virginia, and one of seven children, migrated to Woodford County, Kentucky where he became a blacksmith and engaged in farming. He married Mary Connelley (d. 1870), the daughter of Sandford and Mary Ramey Connelley. They had eleven children: Sandford; Nancy, married David Williams; Mary, married Elijah Neal; William; Daniel; Matilda, married John S. Duncan; Thomas; Martha, married Joseph A. Gaines; Elizabeth, married S.P. Hendricks; James; and Fannie, married George W. Goode.
- Sandford Lyne (1805-1883), the oldest child, served as Brigadier General James M. Hawes' Quartermaster. From 1866 to 1870, he served as the County Judge of Woodford County. In approximately 1836, Sandford and his younger brother William formed a partnership and engaged in the manufacture of hemp. They purchased a 360 acre family homestead in Woodford County, Kentucky, in 1851. Sandford and William also became the guardians of Emma Cleveland (1848-1865) upon the death of her father John Cleveland circa 1850.
- William Dew Lyne, Sr. (1813-1884), the fourth child, married Margaret Jane Kay (1818-1884) of Fayette County, Kentucky. They had six children: Mary E. (1842-1931), married Dr. W.A. Smith; Nannie (1844-1929); William (1847-1890); Sandford Connelley (1850-1937), a thoroughbred breeder in central Kentucky and founder of Larchmont Farm in Jessamine County; Mattie (1854-1923), married John D. Woolley; and Jennie (1857-1947), married Lucien Lee Smith of Texas.
- George Washington Smith (1822-1873), a native Kentuckian, moved to Columbus, Colorado County, Texas, in 1847. In 1860 he became a commissioner of the newly organized Columbus Tap Railway, linking Columbus with Houston and Galveston. An attorney, he served as Judge of the First District Court (1859-1866), as a delegate to the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1866, and was elected to the Texas Supreme Court. He married Mary Jane Hinch (1830-1870). Their son, Lucien Lee Smith (1854-1940), was a Columbus, Texas, merchant and state tax collecter for Colorado. In the 1890s, he worked as a shoe merchant in Lexington, Kentucky. He married Jennie Lyne in 1875; they had four children, including Lucien Lyne Smith, Jean L. Smith, Ina Kaye Smith, and Maurice Bowers Smith.
- Scope and Content
- The Lyne-Smith family papers (dated 1820-1932, undated; 3 cubic feet; 10 boxes, 2 items, 1 folder) comprises correspondence, ledgers, photographs, financial papers, legal papers, maps, and printed material, which documents the business and personal lives of the Lyne family of Kentucky and the Smith family of Columbus, Texas. The bulk of the collection consists of materials pertaining to the Lyne family, specifically Nannie Lyne, Sandford Lyne, and William D. Lyne, Sr. The papers document William and Sandford's business relationship, their guardianship of Emma Cleveland, and Sandford's career as a judge of Woodford County. Nannie Lyne's substantial correspondence stretches between 1863-1917 and contains 22 letters from Confederate prisoners of war located at Camp Douglas, Illinois, and Point Lookout, Maryland. Correspondents include William S. Penney, Philip J. Dean, and J. J. Bodiford. Correspondents in Sandford's papers include John M. McCalla, Robert J. Breckinridge, Danville, James B. Beck, and Basil Duke. Sandford's financial papers include ledgers and daybooks containing inventories of Emma Cleveland's estate which include her slaves. The ledgers provide a detailed record of the care, lease, and disposition of the estate's slaves during the period 1850-1865. Many slaves are noted as having gone to the Union army camp, Camp Nelson in Jessamine County, Kentucky. William D. Lyne, Sr.'s papers include correspondence from Duncan H. Selph, the President of the Danville Female Academy, regarding Emma Cleveland's grades and expenses at the school in 1865. The Smith family papers include correspondenct between George Washington Smith and his wife Mary as well as the correspondence, legal papers, and financial documents of Lucien Lee Smith. The photographs are mostly unidentified however there is a small portion of identified Lyne family photographs. Additionally, there are multiple photographs of men who were members of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Kentucky around 1903.
