UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
SEED INSPECTION IN KENTUCKY, 1938-1939
W. A. PRICE, E. C. VAUGHN, ENCIL DEEN, HOWARD TILSON,
H. T. SHACKLETTE, ALICE McDANlEL, KATHERINE FRIED,
and MARGARET MORTON
A careful study of the character of dealer ’s stock, of farmer
n purchases, and of general seed movements in Kentucky, indicates
a decided trend toward a demand for better seeds. Farniers
are more interested than ever in the analyses of seed as shown
by state tags, and low grade seeds are becoming more and more
unpopular, .
In this bulletin are tabulated the results ot official inspection
I and analysis of seeds exposed for sale in the state from ·l uly 1,
1938, to June 30, 1939. During this period 3.850 lots of seed
were inspected a11d 536 official samples taken.
Table 1 shows the percentages of purity and germination _
stated on tags, the presence of an excessive amount of noxious
weed seeds, tl1e presence of noxious weed seeds not, shown on
tags, irregularities in tags, absence ot tags, and the results of
official analyses ot samples. The variations allowed in purity.
germination, and weed seed per ounce are the same as those
published in Kentucky Regulatory Series, liulletin No. 4.
Revised. Results within the allowed variation are marked with
"—l—" if above, or "Y—" if below statement, on otlicial tags.
_ Variations greater than those allowed constitute violations of
the Kentucky Seed liaw. and such results are printed in black-
faee type. ln the table li means listed and ln means found.
Table 2 is a elassitieation of samples according to wholesale
dealers from whom they were purchased, and indicates violations
found.
Table fi contains a summary to show the kind and number
of violations detected.
