Collection Overview

Biography / History
Gatewood Galbraith was a criminal defense lawyer and recognizeable figure in Kentucky politics, beginning with his 1983 run for Agriculture Commissioner and continuing until his death in 2012. Beginning in the 1990s, Galbraith was on a seemingly endless campaign trail, running seven gubernatorial campaigns and two congressional campaigns as well as a 2003 run for Kentucky Attorney General. During his career, he ran at different times as a democrat, an independant, and a green party candidate, on a platform heavily focused on farmers rights, agrigultural protections, and social justice.
Galbraith was best known, however, for his activism in promoting hemp and cannabis legalization. He was a frequent contributor to local papers such as Snitch, appeared many times in publications such as High Times magazine, and authored his own autobigraphy titled The Last Free Man in America. Other well-known legalization activists such as Willie Nelson, Jack Herer, and Woody Harrelson often played a part in Galbraith's campaign appearances. Galbraith was also an entrepreneur involved in hemp and agricuture-related start-ups, such as JAC Quadractor. As an activist, Galbraith conducted legal research on the medical uses of marijuana and hemp as an agricultural product. Additionally he pushed for marijuana rescheduling with the DEA.
Scope and Content
The Gatewood Galbraith papers (dated 1935-2013, undated; 14 cubic feet; 31 boxes) comprises correspondence, campaign materials, posters, bumperstickers, apparel, hemp artifacts, buttons, video tapes, audio cassettes, photographs, printed materials, and subject files, which document Gatewood Galbraith's career in Kentucky politics and as a cannabis activist. The bulk of the collection comprises material documenting his cannabis activism. Topics include hemp festivals, legal research on medical marijuana, hemp, and DEA rescheduling, and business ventures in small hemp-focused businesses. Notably the Cannabis activism series includes a file focusing on Galbraith's own arrest for stopping the Lexington Fourth of July Parade in protest of laws criminilizing marijuana.
Additionally, the collection documents Galbraith's nine political campaigns, including his campaigns for Agriculture Commissioner, Governor, Congress, and Attorney General. The Political campaigns series is arranged into subseries by campaign and contains campaign materials, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, bumper stickers, and posters.
The collection contains legal records of his work as a criminal defense lawyer, mainly relating to his defense of people arrested for marijuana related offenses; materials relating to his autobiography The Last Free Man in America; and his involvement with the JAC Tractor company. The Artifacts, Audio/Visual, and Photographs series' consist of materials arranged by format that relate to his cannabis activism, political career, and legal career. The artifacts seris contains apparel, buttons, and hemp related artifacts.
