Harris, a physician and first Dean of the University of North Carolina University Medical School, mentions other professors at Transylvania, including Charles Caldwell, Benjamin Winslow Dudley, William Hall Richardson, and Lunsford Pitts Yandell. He describes Lexington as "quite a handsome place but it cannot rank with Nashville in pound of beauty."
