- Biography / History
- Mary Elliott Flanery was born in 1867 in what is now Elliott County. She graduated from the University of Kentucky, and began a teaching career in Elliott and Carter Counties. From 1903 to 1926 she worked as a journalist for the Ashland Daily Independent. She used her columns to advocate for social change. Flanery was a member of the Kentucky Equal Rights Commission, and fought for women's suffrage.
- In 1920 the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment gave women the right to vote. Flanery ran as a Democratic candidate in Boyd County in 1921, and managed to unseat the incumbent Republican, becoming the first Kentucky state legislator. Concerned with Kentucky's marriage and divorce laws and educational reform, she sponsored the Shepard-Towner Maternity Act and introduced the bill that created Morehead State Teachers College. In 1924 she was elected to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, and there became the first person to read a roll call over the radio.
- In addition to work toward women's rights and service as a state legislator, she raised a large family, four daughters and a son. Her son Elliott even served as a State House page for his mother. After Flanery's death in 1933, a bronze marker was permanently affixed to her seat as a memorial.
