One does not , to look too far to discover the

‘Why‘ are such services the apparent answer to greater
participation? I believe that the answer may be found
in the nature of Judaism itselfa We have no sacraments
nor'rituals in which We must participate in Temple to
aid in our "salvationa" It is only in church that
Christians may participate in such sacraments as bap~
tism and communione They must go to church for these,“

Miller and I. Allen Paritz, all pastwpresidents of
our Congregation, attended and were wellwreceived.

This meeting was called to plan for our regional
biennial to be held in Columbus on May 3rd and hth9
and to make additional plans ‘for .our new youth
camp. Plans for the camp are at a critical stage H
since an administrator must be hired and necessary
repairs made before the campers may'be admitted 3
this summer. All of the represenatives were urged ”
to encourage their congregations‘ financial support.

we are Very fortunate o‘have the University of Kentucky
in our community. It makes available an academic atmos~
phere which we Would not otherwise have and provides
many cultural opportunities.

‘Of especial importance to the Jewish community is the
program in H brew and associated fields which is a part
of the Department of Ancient Languages and Literatures.
Through. the special interest of Dr, Jonah W. D. Skiles9
the head of the department, this program has grOWn until
it has three faculty members including one full—time
instructor. This fall at least seven courses Were offerm
ed with an enrollment ofcsome fifty students, both JeW~
ish and non~Jewish. On occasion members of our Congrem
gation have taken these courses and they are encouraged
to continue doing so. g

It has been a priVilege for me,to serve as an instructor
in this program._ I find that I learn much in the prep-
arations of my 'COurses as well as from my students. I

trust that this has been a reciprocal relationship. This”

has been particularly true in the course on the Dead Sea
Scrolls which I am offering this year.

It is axiomatic that rabbis generally find themselves
tOO busy and preoccupied to continue to study and carry
on academic research, although the rabbi (teacher) must
continue to learn in order to teach. And so I am person—
ally grateful for the opportunities provided by our
University and its administration.

During the weekmend of January 19 and

Board of Directors and the Future Planning Committee met
with Rabbi Eugene Lipman to discuss the possibilities of
expanding our Temple within its present site, or of mov—
ing to a new location. Rabbi Lipman recommended that no
further attempt be made in the present location and face
ommended that Weifind a suitable site elsewhere.

Due to a magnificent contribution, it looks as if this
plan might be realized in the not too distant future. As
soon was more definite information is available, the enr
tire Congregation Will be notified.
