RABBI'S MESSAGE

Another year is beginning. It
seems like only yesterday it was
New Years, 1967 or even 1965. And
so we start over again - with hopes
for the days ahead - that the
questions we now face will be
answered, that the conflicts will
be resolved, that the struggles
will be less burdensome.

And while looking ahead, we
also look back, back upon what
has been, what has been accomplish—
ed, the successes and failures,
the joys and sorrows, the good
times and the not so good.

Without the past there can be
no present, no future. We cannot
disregard the past, or belittle
it. It is what has made us what
we are today. This Friday evening
we shall pay our respects to an
important part of our past. Won't
you be in Temple to join in this
tribute?

William J. Leffler
Rabbi

RABBI'S MESSAGE

Hanukkah is now over and the ex-
citement of the holiday is behind us.
But there are a couple of thoughts
on its celebration which I should
like to share with you.

Over the course of the years,
Alana and I have received a number
of Menorahs as gifts - each one
different and lovely, each from a
special friend and so with its own
sentimental value. As we have
looked at these Menorahs year by year
in the cupboard, it has always
seemed a pity that we should not
use each of them. And so, this
year we did. Each member of the
family has his own Menorah to light.
There are no more arguments about
who will light the candles which
night. We are reminded of the
friends who gave us each Menorah.
The room is bright from the light
of many candles and each person
has celebrated his own Hanukkah.

We have also discussed the subject
.of Hanukkah presents and decided
that for us, it is time to return
to the traditional Jewish time of
gift giving - Purim. And so we
did not purchase any presents for
the children this year. They only
received gifts from their friends
and from family - which was quite
ample for them.

But on March 13, the evening of
Purim, Alana and I will give the
children their presents from us.
I'm certain they will be delighted
by whatever they receive and reallg
two gift giving holidays are better
than one.

fella? Wage
A death in a congregation al-

ways causes us to pause and think.
The accidental, unexpected and
tragic death of a teenager causes
us to ponder even more about life
and what we are doing with it -
our attitudes, our'relationships,
our families.

The recent and tragic death of
Ricky Rozen should affect not
only his immediate family, but all
of us. It should serve to bring
back into sharper focus for us

the relationships
which we all tend
granted, which we
the time of birth
but which we take

with our familie
to take for
think about at
or at weddings,
for granted in

between.

Life has meaning and purpose
for us when we are involved not
just with ourselves and our own
problems, but when we are in-
volved with others - when we give
thought to their lives, to their
aspirations, to their troubles, to
their joys. Perhaps this in-
volvement is what makes parenthood
so richly satisfying, as well as
frustrating, aggravating and
worrisome. But if it did not have
these qualities, how insipid life
would be. It is the intensity of
our love and our involvement in
the lives of others which causes
us to grieve. We do not mourn
those whom we do not know and
whose lives have not touched ours.
It is our love for the deceased
that should strengthen us in life,
and "send us back to serve and
bless the living."

And as we ponder these thoughts
about death, wouldn't it be even
better if we could learn to ap-
preciate the living, so that.we
would not have to have to be re-
minded only in moments of sadness?

the movement was inevitably self de-
struetive.

The flower people, to be praised for
the motive of living by love, from the
beginning confused love with euphoria.
They had hoped to abandon the world’s
negative pressures, instead they aban-
doned life. Love was defined as an ab-
sence of tension and an escape into
other worldliness. Their goal was to
relieve life of necessity, responsibility,
anger, frustration, and ambition. But
life without these is euphoria, and
euphoria is merely a step from lifeless-
ness.

Love is neither an escape from life
or the absence of life’s realities. Like
the sun kissing the bud, love opens the
soul to its boundless aliveness. It ad-
mits necessity, responsibility, anger,
frustration, and ambition into our ex-
perience and transforms them into an
inner power for sympathy, conoem,
communication and affection.

Love is a dynamic growing progress
urging us on to a triumph over our
frailties even while we are soiled by
life’s imperfections. It conspires with
reality to lead us to the tomorrow'that
yesterday lost. As such, love merits
life’s tensions because it would sanctify
them by moral and spiritual purpose.

BPHORISMS

3 by Rabbi Julius J. Node!

There can be no compromise with
tyranny, nor can there be appeasement
of evil. If a people behaves in certain
eternal principles of freedom and those
principles are endangered or taken
away by force, then supine submission
is a sin.

status:

To resist oppression is not the same
as believing in the doctrine of force.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
By Dr. J. J. Schachtel

Enough then of silly com-
plaints, of petty peevishness, of
carping criticism. If there is a
motto to be put up in your home
and mine, let it be three words,
"Count your blessings.” Yes,
count your blessings that your
attitude be one of affirmation,
of gratitude, of thankfulness, of
confidence. Look up and forward.
Tomorrow belongs to those who re-
joiced today. Try being thankful.
Try the method of seeing the good
in life and not the bad, and it
won't be long before complaints
will pass away from your mind and
in its place will come the enjoy-
ment of life, the power to do
your job successfully and that
greatest gift of all which is to
love God and your fellow man.f

RABBI'S MESSAGE

As I drive around town I often
.have the radio on and listen to
the programs on it. One of the
things I have become aware of as
I listen is the numbing and de-
humanizing effect that radio has
upon us.

The pleasant and the unpleasant
are presented side by side, with—
out interruption. Sandwiched be-
tween the news of an earthquake
in Sicily and the death of an
elderly man in a snowdrift is a
joyous jingle urging us to spend
money at a certain store. The
announcer tells us of a tragic
auto accident and without taking
a breath urges us to eat at a
looal restaurant. A love song is
interrupted by a news flash re-
porting a terrible apartment fire.

As a result of this kind of
programming, our emotions are
dulled. We do not have time to
change or alter our attitudes in
response to what we are hearing.
Joy follows sorrow in the same
voice, with no chance for us to re—
act to what we hear. Consequently,
we almost cease reacting. We may
cluck our tongue for a moment, but
the announcer quickly brings us
out of that mood and rushes our
attention off in another direc-
tion. After many years of
hearing this kind of programming,
we become hardened to the un-
pleasant aspects of life.

I doubt whether the radio
stations will change their way
of doing things. But there is
no reason that we must succumb
to the insensitivity with which
they inform us about life's
events.

YOUR TYG NEEDS HELP}

Housing for at least 50 boys
and girls is urgently needed if
we are to live up to our Conclave
commitmentfi Please contact Jack
L. Miller, Youth Group Advison,
at 252-5567 or 266-h6h3 at once
with a list of facilities
available.

Our Youth Group rarely comes
to the congregation for help.
Under the circumstances they must
have adult cooperation from the
congregation at large, not just
parents of Youth Groupers. Show
them Adath Israel is behind their
Conclave efforts.
