1 recently participated in
the brief ceremony of affixing
a Mezzuzah on the doorpost of a
new home of a member of our con-
gregation. It was a most heart-
warming and meaningful occasion.
The youno family had only recent-
ly moved into the house and the
glow of its newness for them was
evident in many ways. And Dart
of the excitement of this new
venture for them was the placing
of this small symbol on the entry
to their home.

The ceremony for putting up
a Mezzuzah is a brief one, but
its symbolism is evident. It is
the first sign that one encoun-
ters as he enters that this is a
a Jewish home, that the sanctity
of family life which Our religion
teactes is to be fOund herein,
trat that involvement and parti—
cipation in Judaism is part of
this family's way of living,
that God is reflected in their
personal lives.

We have a tendency today
to down grade rituals and symbols
in religion and to overlook the
symbolic meaning they ought to
have for us. A little metal cab—
sole with a Biblical verse in it
can mean very little - or it can
indicate a great deal; we can
poo-poo it as a silly supersti-

tion, or we can permit it to be a

constant reminder of the ideals
which are part of the brief
prayer which is said when we af-
fix it — “Praised be Thou, O
Lord, Cur God, king of the
Universe, ”ho has sanctified us
by His commandment and hidden

us affix the Mezzuzah.“ ”ow many
of us, With Mezzuzahs on our
doors, have a sense of sanctity

within our homes? How many of us

are reminded of the meaning of

this symbol each time we enter or

leave our homes? We ought to

give this ever—present symbol

some thought each time we pass
it.

CONGRATULATIONS

...Th Nr. & Mrs. Stuart
Lowenthal on the birth of
their daughter, Amy, on

December 30, 1969.

Vith this issue of the Temple
Bulletin, we shall begin to print
for you the text of some of the
resolutions passed at the recent
NARC Biennial in Miami Beach.

This is being done so that you may
know exactly what it is that your
Union is concerned about and on
what it has publicly spoken out:

THE UAHC_ISRAEL PROGRAM

We call upon our congregations
fully to cooperate with the UAHC
Committee on Israel by implementing
the resolution of the 1967 Biennial
Assembly authorizing that national
committee to solicit from the en—
tire constituency of American Re-
form Judaism, as a voluntary offer-
ing, $1.00 per year, oer person,
man, woman and child, for the de—
veolpment and support of Reform
Judaism and its institutions in
Israel.

Further, we call upon each of our
congregations to establish an ac—
tive and effective Israel Committee
whose primary purposes shall be:

1. The encouragement and ad—
vancement of the cause of Progres-
sive Judaism in Israel in coopera-
tion with the World Union for
Progressive Judaism.

2. The education of congrega—
tional members and the members of
the community at large on issues,
both general and specific, affec-
ting Israel.

3. The promotion of visits and
extended learning experiences in
Israel for the congregations‘ mem-
bers of all ages, for the leaders
of the congregations, both lay and
rabbinic, and for the educators
and teachers; all in cooperation
where possible, with the UAHC's
multi—faceted programs on behalf
of Israel.

4. The translation of the unique
Jewish values and creative spirit
of Israel into the spiritual, ed-
ucational and cultural programs of
the synagogue.

Further, we urge the World Union
for Progressive Judaism and its
branches throughout the world con-
tinuously to press for the elimi-
nation of the discriminatory
barriers against non-Orthodox
Judaism.

Sabbath services. T'ere are those
who are religious in their attend—

Pecause there are so many who
are in the latter group, T have
asked for a number of years now
that our Worship Committee be a
working committee — not just to
assign ushers and pulpit guest.
Honefully, Hrrman Wides, ttis year‘s
chairman, is going to pick up this
challenge and demand of his com-
mittee that it consider the full
scope of worship — what it is and
what it is not, what it can be,
and what it might be for us.

Worship can be a meaninoful ex~
perience for us. Some people con—
tinue to find that the Union Prayer
Book meets their needs. ”thers
find it inadequate. (or TYG mem-
bers go to OVFTY—toot and are

vices there. Come congregations

activities are relevant to us,
though we may not agree with every
conclusion. But at least, we ought
to be aware and exposed to the
alternatives. Tf you would like

TOY” ‘J’ PVCP,’ year. (mania,- ww. live,

The holiday is also the tine
when lfiraelis, younc are old, on
out on t"e l'illzirm, not only to
enjoy the retirth “‘ nature, but
also to help nature, to plant
young seedlings on what l'ereto’ore
was only barren ground. These
young shoots eventually will grow
into beautiful nature trees, ‘orn—
ing a forest to protect and noln
the soil in place ~ a concern of
vital interest to the State of
lsrael, whose land has been ravaged
by centuries of abuse and destruc-
tion.

The celebration of such a holi—
day as lu B'Shevat (and Tu means
15, thus the 15th of Shevat), is
a yearly reminder to us 0‘ our
dependence on the cycles of nature.
The_spring seed catalogues are
arriVing and we yearn for the
warmer days of April and ray

lat about now we have had suf—
ficient of winter and would love
to see some almond trees in bloom.

'ur Judaism is very much tied
to the seasons in Israel. And in
a way this connection is very nice,
since spring arrives there sooner
than here and we can do some vi—
carious enjoying.
