W ...to Heddy and Louis Rubin on the birth of a baby girl, born Satur- day, December 27, 1975. This month a small group of con- gregants will join me in initiating an informal dialogue group with mem- bers of Christ The King Church. This will be a new facet of our Tem— ple program, because heretofore we have not had any real inter—religious discussion here in Lexington, a gap in communications which I have found most unfortunate. Hopefully this will no longer be the case. This dialogue group begins at a most fortuitous time also because only this past month Pope Paul is— sued a statement dealing with Israel and the rights of the Palestinians, and we need to consider with ..e of our Roman Catholic neighbors what this appeal of their Pope means to them and to us. The relationship between Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church through the course of history has not been a very amicable one. And in recent years the "unchristian" behavior of Christianity toward its parent re— ligion has been pointed out with in— creasing frequency, not just by Jew— ish scholars, but also by Christians themselves. The compliance of the Church with Hitler has been exposed. Vatican II in part reacted to this situation and issued a statement re— garding the attitude of Catholics toward Judaism. However, pious statements at large meetings do little to alter indivi— dual attitudes and behavior. These pronouncements need to be implement- ed at the local level. This is one of the motivating factors for the Catholic participation in such a dialogue. For us, we need to coun— ter some of the feeling of isolation which we have begun to sense since the UN vote on Zionism. Where this dialogue will lead I cannot be certain. But it should be an interesting and challenging ex- perience for us. William J. Leffler Rabbi 9%) I ATTENTION I Pursuant to Article III, Sec— tion 6 of the Temple By—Laws, there will be a special congrega- tional meeting on Sunday evening, January ll, 1976 at 7:00 P.M., in order to raise the limit on Temple btedness "not to exceed an "nal $200,00C more than the debt itation". At the conclusion of worship, we shall have a discussion of the liturgy and some of the changes which have been made in this new book. To begin familiarizing the congregation with some of the language of this new guide to worship, we shall be quoting during the coming weeks, the new wording of some familiar passages found in it: Through prayer we struggle to experience the Presence of God. Let us be sure that the One we invoke is the Most High, not a god of battles, of state or status or 'success' — but the Source of peace and mercy and goodness. For, truly: "The gods we worship write their names on our faces, be sure of that. And we will worship something — have no doubt of that either. We may think that our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of the heart — but it will out. That which dominates our imagination and our thoughts will determine our life and character. Therefore it behooves us to be careful what we are worshipping, for what . . ~ V! we are worshipping we are beconung. Leffler President: Jack L. Miller First Vice President: Dr. Martin P. Kaplan Sec Second Vice President: Charles Stern Treasurer From the Rahbi’s Desk The last Friday of this month we shall formally introduce the new Union Prayer Book, Gates 9; Prayer, to our congregation at were This prayerbook has been discussed and considered for quite a wh.,e now, with those of us who used it at the recent UAHC Biennial in Dallas receiving a souvenir copy. This prayerbook is a great deal bigger than the one to whict we are accustomed. It has 779 pages. Its format is different also. There is more Hebrew in it and the Hebrew is interspersed with the English, so that we can utilize it differently if we wish. The language has been changed. The archaic "thou's" and "canst's" have been changed to "you" and "can". New prayers, reflecting contemporary concerns have been added. Old prayers have been changed to convey more current ideas. There is more evidence of the traditional prayerbook to be found in many of the services. When we bagin to worship from this prayerbook, we may do so hesita— tingly. The-words, the rythm will be different. It will not be a one time, experimental service, as we have from time to time. It will be a new prayerbook, which we shall be using for many years to come, and to which we shall eventually become accustomed ~ just as we became accus— tomed to the Revised Union Prayer Book. When we introduce this service, we shall do so, keeping in mind the changes which its text is making. Therefore we shall do it carefully, and provide time often in the service for me to comment on some of the changes in the text, as well as for you to comment and ask questions. All this will occur on Friday, January 30th. So mark your calendar and plan to attend worship that evening when we first start using the new Prayer Books. William J. This record is available to the Temple community for use on week days. The Jewish experience in America is one of the most interesting suc— cess stories in history. The roots of the American Jewish community go back even farther then English colonial rule - to l65h, when a tiny group of 23 Jews from Recife arrived in New Amsterdam. From that time on Jews have left their imprint on the fabric of American life. The recording takes the listener on a 200 year Journey through various phases of the Jewish experience in America. Through the early synagogue music one can recapture the atmosphere of colonial and 19th century congregations. Through the numerous American Yiddish songs one can relive the Joy of having finally arrived in America, the hardships of immigrant life, the hope and determination of the workers‘ movements, the beauty of the Yiddish theater. com/[ITTEE MEETINGS Youth ACtiVitieS Religious School Committee Well gang, it is finally here.
