Ddbbi’s Messaae

I jUSt read an article by a young man who had become interestej in
his own geneelbgy and had spent A great deal of time researching his
family tree. His grandparcnts had come to this Country in the RHZW's
from Poland and he initially knew nothing uhout their backgrnund. how-
ever through his efforts he discovered numerous relatives in this onn~
try, in lsrael and even a few ieft in Europe. But, he also l9HTHvd that
over half of the people whom he discovered, had been killed in the Holo—

Laust.

Within the past few months, a number of suspected Nazi war criminals
have been arrested in this tountry and now face possible deportation for
their activity during World War II. Thirty years have elapsed since
the end of that tragic era and what oceured then seems like anoient
historv to so many of our young people today.

Yet 30 years is not really so long ago. .\nd it happened to us — to
many mtmhers of our own families, as the voung man distoverud. Brutuli— 7;
tv, inhumanity, bestiality, atrocities: Whv should we want to keep 1Q
recalling it? Haven't these suspected criminals suffered within them—
selves znr long enough? Shouldn't we turn our attention to something V7
more pleasant? ;‘
At the entrance to a modern synagogue in Yppbr Nazareth in lsrael is di
part cf 3 gas chamher engine from a death camp. Next to it, in Hebrew, :3
the word Remember. As Jews we need to remember - both the glory and ed

the depravity we have encountered. The glorv is easy and pleasant to
recall. We can be chauvinistic when we speak of it. But the depravity
is the moral lesson of history. it is intended to convey to us what can

happen when humanitv descends to the depths uF depravity and begins to 50
profane life with terror, war, and destruction. Life Pedomes ' ‘.
pain, snitering and death ensue.

A ton often these effevts are academic, ancient history, not syh
relevant. Perhaps we all ought tn do our geneolngy and like the vnung in”
man wfin wrote the artirle, see now many members of our families we Yeh
never met because they perished in the Holoraust and lie in unmarked “qr
graves. when we look at it in this way, the Holocaust can become very A“
personal for us. \wr

up at West Point and take with them
their attitudes about honesty.

On the other hand, I also con—
sidered how many adults also cheat —
when we think it is OK — we may
drive faster than the speed limit,
hedge a little on our income taxes,
or just do a little cheating at
solitaire. These things do not
greatly upset us. We rationalize
them away by saying that they are
not so important and don't really
hurt anyone.

I Ir

This may to some extent be cor—
‘QCt’ however there is a larger
principle that applies here — what
does cheating say about the person
who does it? What sort of person
is he'> Does he bend the rules to
his own convenience, while at the
same time condemning the next per;
son for doing the same sort of
thing? Our ethical standards are
not always straightforward. We
often forbid in Others what we
will permit for ourselves. Incon—
sistancy can take many forms.

At our meeting on January 16

The response to this constitution

Regionals were discussed at
the meeting and names for applica—
tions were taken. If you wish your

paid your dues.

The following article was taken from
the January issue of the CCAR News—
letter:

WITH APOLOGIES 29 PEPSI

A protest over our~recent arti-
cle on Pepsi's absence from the Is—
raeli retail market, implying poli-
tical motivations behind their poli—
cy, has led us to investigate the
matter more fully, through the
National Jewish Community Relations
Advisory Council and the Anti—Defa—
mation League. PepsiCo is apparent-
ly not‘boycotting Israel, but is ab—
sent from that market for purely
economic reasons, and in fact trades
regularly with Israel in raw pro—
ducts. Pepsi also has a large numbel
of Jewishly—managed franchises in
this country. Hadassah, which pro—
vided us with the raw copy for our
article, has since issued a formal
retraction, and found that the
Israeli government told the Presi-
dent of Pepsi that since the Israeli
market is already 80% dominated by
fruit drinks, they were neither
needed nor wanted at this time. Ha-
dassah also reports that the company
has a long history of active concern
and support for civic and humani-
tarian endeavors, including Jewish
ones, that shows no hint of bias.

part of international relations.

As Jews we feel these effects very strongly. Our people were killed
in Munich. Our people were held hostage in Entebbe. Our people were
slaughtered by Hitler. This immorality strikes at our hearts. It
reawakens memories of the centuries of inhumane treatment which we have
experienced at the hands of the nations.

As we look at what has occured once more — the apparent lack of con—
cern for justice - we feel helpless against the forces of evil in the
world. And yet we cannot despair. Judaism urges us not to give UP, to
maintain hope in face of disappointment or defeat. And in this situation
there is even more at stake — that we have to continue to play our old
role of the conscience of the world, to point out to the nations what is
the proper thing to do. The Torah proclaims: ”Justice, justice, shall
you pursue". This charge is as valid for us now as it was when it was
first proclaimed. Let us speak out loudly once more!

loved one. This year, 1977, Tu B'Shevat falls on February 3rd.
