ADATH ISRAEL

JANUARY 1, 1997

IN THIS CORNER...

On Shabbat Hanuka, I delivered a sermon about the
current situation in Israel concerning the attempt by the
Orthodox Jewish community to change the “Law of Return”
and therefore the status of “Who is a Jew?”. For those of you
who are familiar with the term, the “Law of Return”, grants
any Jew the right of immediate citizenship in Israel should
they choose to immigrate. The question of “Who is a Jew”
stems from the right to determine Jewish status and what that
status means.

Since the creation of the State of Israel. the Orthodox
Jewish community’s rabbinate has controlled the answer to
the question of Jewish status. Individuals considered Jews
outside of Israel who were either converted by non-Orthodox
rabbis or considered Jewish by virtue of patrilineal descent
(born of a Jewish father and non-Jewish mother, and raised as
a Jew) had to undergo a conversion by an Orthodox rabbi in
Israel in order to be married in Israel. They could move to
Israel, live in Israel. and be citizens in Israel, but individuals
not considered Jewish by the Orthodox rabbinate had no
Jewish rights in Israel. In the eyes of the Orthodox
community in Israel, these converts or children not born from
Jewish mothers weren’t Jewish.

The Orthodox rabbinate’s dominance on this issue
comes from its continuing role as a coalition member with the
party in power (now Likud). As such they have demanded
that the portfolio for the Ministry of Religion be given to
them. They have made several attempts over the years to
amend the “Law of Return” which would change the status of
“Who is a Jew." The attempts repeatedly failed due to
pressure from Jews in the diaspora. Now things may be
changing.

On October 14, 1996, a group of Knesset members
from the Orthodox religious parties proposed a bill which will
severely restrict conversion to Judaism in Israel. In essence
the bill is a back door way of modifying the “Law of Return”
and will change the definition of “Who is a Jew” to include
o_nly those converted to Judaism under Orthodox Rabbinical
authority. This problem is further exacerbated because it
appears that the government coalition may back the proposed
bill and ram it through the Knesset as quickly as possible.

IN THIS CORNER (from Page I)

The proposed amendment says that “there shall be
no legal validity whatsoever to a conversion unless it
receives the approval of the highest religious court in Israel
of the religion to which the aforementioned wishes to join. "
This means that a convert who approaches the Jewish
Agency abroad and requests aliyah based upon his or her
conversion, would be forced to seek the approval of the
Chief Rabbinate as a condition for immigration (of course,
this approval would be denied).

The Council of Jewish Federations (of which CKJF
is a member) meeting at their annual convention in

November held this year in Seattle passed a strong resolution
against changing any aspect of the Law of Return, “which is
one of the pillars of Jewish identification with the State of
Israel in each and every Jewish community around the
world.” They also said, “[we] urge the leaders of Israel not to
underestimate the strength of feeling on this matter, and its
detrimental elTect on Jewish unity and Israel-Diaspora
relations. We direct the leadership of CJF to convey to the
political leaders of Israel, in the most vigorous, immediate,
and continuing way possible, they must not risk dividing the
world Jewish community.”

My friends, this is a serious challenge by the
Orthodox Jewish community in Israel, supported by the
Orthodox Jewish community in the United States, to undercut
non-Orthodox Judaism and the authority of non-Orthodox
rabbis. All of the concerned religious movements and their
leaders are responding with the full force of their offices. It is
important that we stay informed. It is important that we stay
concerned. It is important that we don’t respond with a knee
jerk reaction, but that we consider our options if the
amendment is passed. As a community, we will decide.

What I don’t want you to do is turn your back on the
people in Israel who still need us. I have asked our local

federation to provide a list of where our money goes when we

directly to Reform Judaism in Israel. By contacting the

REPAIRING THE WORLD

Temple Adath Israel has done some outstanding
projects in the history of our Temple and we have proudly
added another excellent project to our long list. Last summer,
TAI hosted the TZEVET MITVOT, the first adult UAHC project
in Lexington for a week of service to the Lexington
community. A large (almost full page) article was very well
done in the winter edition of REFORM JUDAlSM, page 73,
One of the TAI members surveyed several of our membership
and found that over half of those polled had not seen the
article. Bringing this to the attention of our membership is an
opportunity to showcase the type of work in which our Temple
is involved and the wonderful job many of our volunteers do
on a regular basis. The Temple received good reviews from
the community, the media and our REFORM JUDAISM
magazine.

If you don't have the magazine or can't see one of
your friend's copy, the magazine is in our Temple library and
copies of the article will be placed on several bulletin boards
throughout the Temple.

The following members of TAI and the community
were involved with this wonderful project.

Those who served in-home dinners were Jon &
Sandy Adland, Alan & Anne Bialik, Drew & Bobbi Fried, Kevin
& Ann Freund, Bill 8. Jane Grise, Ed & Sue Hirsh, Joe &
Karola Kuc, Janice Kuperstein & Kay lsrael, Dan 8. Terri
Potter, David & Cheri Rose and Jerry & Rose Rita Wurmser.

Those who served on-site lunches and at-Temple
dinners were: Barbara Barr, Jane Burri, Mary Engel, Judy
Engelberg, Kaye Frankel. Elaine Gellin, Judy Hersh, Kerri
Hersh, Odette Dutton Kaplan, Ruth Kraman, Natalie Krasik,
Marilyn Lieber, Rina Luban, Anita Mersack, Zina Rozenzhak,
Janet Scheeline, Sarah Schrier, Tina Simpson, Bonnie Sobel
and Ida Waldman.

If for one reason or another, we have inadvertently
overlooked the name of any volunteer member, please call the
Temple office and we will add your name proudly, in our next
issue of the Temple bulletin, TAI members have every right to
be proud of this project and the many others in which our
Temple participates. The Temple staff, Board of Trustees and
its' membership offers a hearty “thank you”, standing ovation
and a pat on the back.

that she shared her haunting memories ofthe holocaust,
with us. Emilie is a true heroine. I want to extend a
special thanks to Sandy Adland for orchestrating this

preparing the scrumptious meal. Everyone just seemed to
pitch in and lend a hand. It was a splendid, spontaneous
community effort. The camaraderie and enthusiasm was
overwhelming. Thank you! Thank you? Thank you!

body, to be aware of changes, to seek medical attention and
to insist that she be taken seriously.” Dr. Ken Foon,
Director of the Markey Cancer Center, was our guest

The Rosh Chodcsh group is off
to a great start with some very
interested and interesting
women. At our last meeting.
after a brief blessing, we held a
candle lighting ceremony
honoring eight Jewish women
of valor, both ancient and
contemporary. In the absence
of much information about the
matriarchs, we decided to write our own midrashini about
them. How did Rachel feel when she sziw her sister marry the
man she herself loved? How did Leah fccl being passed off
on Jacob? Why did Rebecca conspire with Jacob to deceive
Isaac into giving him the blessing for the first born? How can
this relate to our lives today?

At the next meeting, January 8, at 7:30 PM, at
Lg. any woman who wishes to, may light a candle for her
own mother, or for some female ancestor that particularly
inspires her. Our format is informal. and open to all ideas
and areas of Jewish women’s lives. How does the Torah
speak to us as women, and what can we glean from what it
says and does not say? Come join us for a provocative and
lively discussion.
