It is blessed by the increase of a candle each night for eight nights. As the light increases so does ourjoy. (Are not most of us moved by the sight of a fully lit Hanukah menorah on the last night.) Hanukah is the only extended Jewish holiday (Passover and Sukkot are examples of two others) that doesn’t really change from night to night. The only difference in celebration is that on the first night we say three blessings and on the other seven nights we say two blessings. Though it is a minor holiday on our yearly calendar of holidays and holy days, it certainly stands quite tall. Many of us look to Hanukah as our Jewish beacon of light in December. Though we don’t want to overplay it, we relish the fact that during this busy holiday season we have something to look forward to or hold on to. Hanukah is a holiday of depth and meaning. It reminds us of why we are Jews and what it means to be a human being. Hanukah teaches us about courage and conviction and community. Hanukah teaches us about faith and belief and commitment. Hanukah teaches us about leadership and life. in modern times, Hanukah also teaches us about the act of giving. It is true that we give gifts to our relatives and friends. it is a chance to reach out and say that l care about you or that I love you. We shouldn’t forget though that there are a lot of people out there who have no one to receive a gift from or even give a gift to. We shouldn't forget about all of these people. Some of these people are Jewish, most of them are not, but they could all use the gift of love in some way or form. Maybe this year at Hanukah, send a donation to one of our many Lexington or Central Kentucky agencies that work with those who are alone, who feel unloved and unwanted. Whether it is the Hope Center, the Salvation Army, the Nest or any of the several places in town, which could let someone know that someone else cares. The Maccabees fought to preserve Judaism and its way of life for us. Let us fight for the life of so many who have lost hope by sharing with them the Ii ht of our menorah. z , ; O A Message from the President This past fall, the Temple's - ”1 Social Action Committee and the ’ Synagogues Men' s Club started thinking about the possibility of participating in the Lexington Habitat for Humanity's program to build a home for a qualified low income family. After several meetings and many discussions, we decided to join forces in this endeavor. The entire Jewish community in Lexington has now decided to come together to sponsor and build a house through the Lexington Habitat for Humanity. Lexington Habitat is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat has built 154 homes in Lexington and serves families of low income who meet Habitat's home ownership requirements. Families are selected based on their need for housing, their ability to pay and their willingness to work with Habitat. All families must agree to provide 250 to 500 hours of "sweat equity" by working on their own home or other Habitat homes and by attending workshops on parenting, financial management and home maintenance. Each family has a $38,000 mortgage, which is repaid over 20 years. As a Habitat sponsor, we are required to raise $35,000 and provide volunteers to actually assist in the building of the home. We hope to build this house in May and June of 2001. To participate in a build this spring, we must make formal application for sponsorship by the end of December. For this reason, a community-wide appeal will be going out at the beginning of December to begin raising the necessary funds. Please support this project. If you are interested in assisting with the build in any way, please contact the Temple office. This is an incredible opportunity for the Jewish community to work together for a wonderful goal. MUSIC NEWS This year the Sunday morning schedule allows our Religious School students to have more Jewish music experiences than in the recent past. Individual as well as combined grade levels meet for 30 minute music sessions. During that time, the students are exposed to a variety of songs that address Shabbat and holiday celebrations, liturgy, and Jewish values. During the year we will listen to music recorded by famous contemporary Jewish singers/songwriters, and we‘ll also explore traditional melodies as well. Mazel Tov to the members of our TAI Makhela who recently accompanied Jewish singer/song- writer Doug Cotler during his recent appearance in Lexington. They did an outstanding job!
