 FROM WHERE I SIT
by
RABBI MAURICE DAVIS
Haven't done much ‘sitting' this
past week..Seven days on my back is
not my idea of fun and games....u...
After examining the ceiling intently
what else can you look at.ooqo.....0.
when you are flat on your back? I
spent long hours thinking about the
YOUQOOOOIIOOCIGBOIIII‘IOOU0.00:5.tfle.
I've used this column to get many
things off my chaste...I hope that
you haven't minded¢.=................
I've also used this column to
pour out some hopes and dreams of
mine. I hope you haven‘t minded thato
But lying on my back..,I realized
that there was one more purpose for
this coluwn....one I haven't used so
very much.......................rq..
That is to thank you for the part—
nership...which makes our Temple
Click................................
This is not a one man 301300000500
and most of you realize that......,..
A congregation without a rabbi...a.or
a rabbi without a congregation is
only one halfa team trying to do a
team job....It can be done.....but
not welloonoouoooootoooocoo-oooouaooo
By and large....we have functioned
as a team....as a partnership....in
the most exalted task there is......
It is to find out where we are in the
scheme of things...to testify to cer—
tain dreams we share....and to build
our lives on something more abiding
than the stones we use to build our
houses..............................
The job is nowhere near completion
.....and it never will..........but
we can work together.........learn
together.........pray together......
and together we can grow....in love
......and dignity...................
we have a good team.....;Ne are
involved in a good game.............
Let‘s join hands in a good lifea....

' STAND BACK FOR BROTYERHOOD

It's here again: You know what
I mean........That'TEEK they call
‘Brotherhood‘.........................

After fift;7hone weeks of bicker—

and, as if we Were caught in a parade
that snarls up traffic, a voice is
heard, "Stand Back; Stand back, please
Brotherhood is passing byél”.o......on

1"hat a sad commentary on our times
....that we need this kind of -poli3c

a moment......to stop and take a qrick
look at 3rotherhood....sefore it hass—
es down the street.....and out of
sight......and out of mind....*nd out
of heart.............................n

I wonder......do we seriously be—
lieve that this week of officialdom
will change the minds of men?

Perhaps we need more than this
temporary tolerance to solve our sick-
nessesooo-ooooouoo-oecon-onloaaooooooo

Perhaps we need more than a pannel
of clergyman...speaking at luncheon
clubs..reciting in sonorous tones,
MMhat I like about me."

Perhaps we need a little thinking
on the Subject...to see exactly just
what Brotherhood means................

e need to translate tiie pleasant
words into realities....such as re—
stricted neighbor hoods...9 nd segrega—
tion in the schools...and anti—semitic
literature...end anti-Catholic wise-
cracks................................

we need to translate Brotherhood
into world affairs...end *rab oil.....
and warfare...........................

We need totranslate Brotherhood
into little things...1ike friendship
instead of sniping...and instinctive
trust instead of rampant suspicion....

And if we have not the greatness,
nor the courage, nor the compassion to
do these things..at least let us not
delude ourselves that an annual parade
fulfills our duty.....................
”Stand back, Brotherhood is passing

--V CATCHING UP WITH YESTERDAY
. i7 I-

Pause for a moment...in memory of
George 7ashington...who walked upon
this earth some two hundred years ago,
who stood on the balcony of New York‘s
Federal hall and accepted the presi—
dency of the United States............

Pause for a moment...and remember
the words he wrote to the Jews of New—
port) ROIOIOOICDQIQQcool-aocbootaonuao

"....for happily, the government
of the United States...gives to bigotry
no sanction, to persecution no assist»
ance....".......................,.1..:

And now pause again...and think of
the Commonwealth of Kentuck ...There is
a Bill before the Legislature in Frank~
fort which states.....................
"It is hereby declared to be the policy
of the Commonwealth that the American
ideal of equality of opportunity re—
quires that students, otherwise quali-
fied, be admitted to educational in—
stitutions without regard to race,
color, religion, creed, or national
origin..u”uunu...".............o

It‘s a big step forward...but......
they tell me..g...the BILL will die£..
Too radical: Ahead of our timesl.....’

Pause for a moment in memory of
George Uashington...and pray that our
Commonwealth can catch up with him....
