- Biography / History
- George Russell Young (1905-1973) was born in Dodd, Indiana to Emma Young (1882-1959) and an unknown father; he lived with his grandparents Henry Young (1833-1925) and Augustine Thomas (1845-1924). He married Elsie Margaret Bauer (1903-1989) and together the couple had five children, Wilma (b. 1926), Elsie Mae (1927-2010), Robert Lee (1929-1929), Thelma Jean (b. 1934), and Shirley Ann (1935-2017). George worked as a farmer, school bus driver, and mail carrier over the course of his life.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The George Russell Young account books (dated 1922-1923, undated; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises two account books that document the amount of money spent and earned by George Young while working on his family's farm in Indiana in the early twentieth century. In the books, he lists the amount of money spent on gas for his car, amount he earned through various jobs, debts owed to him, how much he paid farmhands for work, the amount of hours people worked for him, and dimensions of items.
- The George Russell Young account books collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
