President Dickey extended a cordial welcome to the newly elected \ members of the Faculty. 1 Dr. Scherago presented the proposed University Calendar for l962—65. l After discussion and two amendments to the Calendar the motion was made and approved that action on the proposed Calendar as presented be postponed [ to the November Faculty meeting and that it be referred back to the \ Schedule Committee for consideration of the proposals and amendments that ( had been projected in the discussion. ) Dean Wall presented resolutions on the death of Dr. James H. dartin, > former staff member of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station. The Chairman called for a moment of silent prayer in acceptance of the resolutions. ii? 1 MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY FACULTY, OCTOBEL 9, 1961 DR. JAMES H. MARTIN The University of Kentucky colleagues of Dr. James H. Martin and his many friends throughout the city and state were greatly saddened by his death on August 5, 1961. ii V W Dr. Martin first became a member of the Kentucky Agricultural ‘IWV i Experiment Station staff in 1909 as a Drug Inspector in the Food and ‘ Drug Division. He was the first Drug Inspector employed in Kentucky. :1 He remained in this post for two years and returned again in 1923 as '3" Assistant Chemist in the Public Service Laboratory. He worked continu~ I: ously as a chemist until he was given change—of—work status in 1941. : He was recalled to duty in 1945 and worked until July 1, 1950. _e 3H continued to work part time as Acting Drug Chemist until 1954. From it then until his death, he continued on change—of—work status. 1. Dr. Martin was born in Mason County, Kentucky, October 15, 1871. He received the PhG Degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1892. He operated Martin's Drug Storein Winchester from 1892 through 1914. . For two years he worked for the U. S. Duty & Company of [Q Winchester. Following this he traveled for the E. S. Squibb & Sons in 1 sales and promotion work in the state of Kentucky. .__..r_ _, __ .._/vy>_,“.,——-_/q ,——-. Hap—5‘4 — ,‘.,———\., tit He was active in all affairs pertaining to pharmacy and drugs in . [ the state from the time he opened his drug store in Winchester through i the remainder of his life. He served on the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, ( was a member of the American Chemical Society and the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists. He was a member of the Elks Club in flinohester. He served on‘me Finchester Board of Education and was an active member of the First Christian Church in Winchester. Dr. Martin's work as a drug chemist was most outstanding. During the period of his service he was the only such chemist in this section. It was his duty to work on many poison cases.
