Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Holland family of Richmond, Indiana consisted of Emory Edward Holland (1883-1949) and Mable Fern Rash Holland (1884-1957). The couple married in 1911. Mable's mother, Sarah E Rash (1860-1933) and sister Lela Rash Lawson (1893-1973), both lived with the Hollands according to different census records from 1920-1940. Emory practiced as a physician according to multiple censuses, and served in both World War I and World War II.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Holland family travel scrapbook (dated 1946-1947; 0.47 cubic feet; 1 item) comprises one scrapbook that documents the travels of the Holland family across Route 66 in the late 1940s. Emory Holland and his wife Mable Holland documented four trips out to California via Route 66 from 1946 to 1947. The couple collected many tokens from their trip including; postcards, programs, magazines, photographs, meus, newspaper clips and letters. These items were then pasted into a scrapbook by Mable after their travels. The couple visited Oklahoma, Missouri, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, California, Mexico, Texas and Arkansas. While in these states the pair participated in different tourist attractions and events such as ice skating shows, nature walks in the desert, visiting Hollywood and the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Holland family travel scrapbook collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
