- Biography / History
- Doris Kuprion was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 8, 1921. She was born into a family of photographers, one of twenty in the family. Her father, Arthur Kuprion photographed horse races, specifically the photo-finish pictures. Doris traveled with her father between Louisville and Chicago, taking race-track photographs. She took pictures in the winner's circle, while her father did the photo-finish. Her camera took a rate of 185 pictures per second and she developed the photos within a minute after the race ended, showing the image to the judges. She was most likely the first woman admitted into the press box at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. Doris considered herself a sports photographer, photographing boxing and wrestling, in addition to horse racing.
- Her brothers, Arthur Jr. and Robert were also photographers. Her twin brother Robert was killed in WWII. During WWII, Doris was a professional photographer for a war plant, before working for a distillery. Doris worked as a news photographer, shooting for the International News Service, Acme, and the U.P. She died on February 19, 2011, in Crystal Beach, Florida.
- Scope and Content
- The Doris Kuprion photographs (dated approximately 1940s, 0.27 cubic feet; 7 items) include seven black and white prints of identified race horses. The photographs are of Ariel Ace, Colony Boy, Knockdown, Porterfield, Rippey, Star Pilot, and With Pleasure. Colony Boy and Knockdown are both photographed being ridden by an African American. The horses were all photographed on the racetrack with a seated rider. Colony Boy, Knockdown, Porterfield, and Star Pilot were all captured in motion, running on the track, while the other images are of the horses standing still.
