Collection Overview

Biography / History
Anderson Chenault (1812-1884) was a farmer and slaveowner in Madison and Montgomery Counties. Born in Madison County to David Cheanult and Nancy Tribble Chenault, Anderson moved to Montgomery County in 1832 with his brother Walter and purchased a farm. He returned to Madison County in 1843 and married Margaret Oldham (b. 1830) there in 1852. They had seven children: Nannie, William C., Waller, Anderson J., Mollie W., Maggie O., and Lucy. Chenault returned to Montgomery County in 1853 and resided there until his death in 1884.
Scope and Content
The Montgomery County Historical Society, Anderson Chenault papers (1826-1878; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises slave bills of sale, letters, receipts, contracts, and powers of attorney. The papers primarily relate to Chenault's activities as a slaveowner. The slave bills of sale and other agreements record Chenault's purchase and sale of slaves. The papers include a letter of introduction for Anderson Chenault to a Union soldier, Col. Gilbert. The letter states that Chenault was a loyal Union man looking for an escaped slave. The slave is not named. Slaves owned by Chenault included Oren, Henry, James, Jane, Charles, Weldin, Melinda, Eliza, David, and Catherin. Upon emancipation many of Chenault's former slaves took his last name. Additionally, the papers contain post-emancipation documents, such as contracts with Oren Chenault and James Chenault as well as a receipt for a coffin bought by Anderson Chenault for the wife of Jim "a black man."
