Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Bartholomew-Hoyt families of Vermont, Connecticut, and Ohio included Noah Bartholomew (1801-1871), his wife Mary Freeman (1803-1902), and their children: Marcus Freeman, Albert Luther, and George Kellam (1835-1917); and Benjamin R. Hoyt (1789-1872), his wife Lucinda Freeman (1793-1883), and their children: Benjamin Thomas, Francis Southtack, Albert Harrison, Emeline L. Caroline E., and Ellen J. (1834-1900). Lucinda and Mary were both daughters of Thomas Freeman (1762-1848) and Rebecca Swift (1767-1844). The Bartholomew and Hoyt families were further connected due to George marrying his cousin Ellen in 1864, after the passing of his first wife, Eliza Jane Briggs (1832-1862). It is unclear whether May Bartholomew, daughter of George, is a product of his first or second marriage. George was an educator and his career took him and Ellen from Vermont to Ohio in the 1870s.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Bartholomew-Hoyt family letters (dated 1825-1898, undated; 3.38 cubic feet; 8 boxes) comprises letters sent between the members of the Bartholomew and Hoyt families of Vermont, Connecticut, and Ohio in the late nineteenth-century. The majority of the collection consists of letters between George K. Bartholomew and his second wife, Ellen J. Hoyt. They write to each other frequently, discussing their families, personal health, daily life, travel, employment, the Civil War, deaths of family members, visiting family and friends, attending lectures, and their daughter's activities. There are numerous letters between Ellen and George and their siblings and parents as well. These discuss daily life, friends and family serving in the army during the Civil War, deaths of family members, personal health, work as preachers and antiquarians, travel, education, and hopes for the future. There are a few tax receipts and invoices included in the collection, detailing payments made for property and for family member's educations.
- The Bartholomew-Hoyt family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
