Scope and Content
The Mary C. Greenway memory books (dated 1832-1923, undated; 0.08 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprise three memory books that document the illness and death of Mary Greenway, and education of other Greenway children in Maryland in the nineteenth century. The first two books, one with green and gold on the cover and the other with "Mary C. Greenway" written on the cover, includes poems and memories about Mary Greenway written in the decade preceding her death written by her family and friends. Many of the poems have heavy religious overtones, with many discussing meeting her heavenly father and her soul ascending from earth. In the third book, with "Wm. W. T. Greenway" on the cover, there are entries describing the day two relatives of the Greenway family passed away, along with a first-hand account of Mary's passing. Both entries detail common Victorian death rituals, along with a later entry describing the Greenway sibling's going to visit and fix up Mary's gravesite. Alongside the entries in the third book are notes from school lessons, written copies of articles, and various food recipes.
The Mary C. Greenway memory books are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
