SEA researching possibility of tall semester break

By Lance Williams

\Vhen taking a look at the fall semester calendar
one section catches the eye immediatelv: that huge
middle section from I ahor Day in September until
Thanksgivin with no hreaks.

Most stut ents seem to agree that the1 don 1 want
that much class time without 1 hreak. hut no one has
found a w .11 to do it and make e1 er111ne happy Stu—
dent groups have made several attempts at getting
the UK Senate ( ouncil to approve a fall hreak hiit
no one has )roved successful.

“The fall break is a good idea" said Raymond
( .1111, Sen ate ( ouncil chairman. “No one has ohject'
ed to the concept w it s inst the det ails."

This spring, a Student (1111ernment .\ssoc1atioii

.._-H.-_

committee plans to develop a new proposal that will
satisfy the council and get a break for students

Ali .'\nioli, co- chairman of the Academic Rights
(Ioniinittee. hopes to have a plan ready for the Sen—
ate hy the end of‘the semester or early next 11.11.

Most of this semester will he spent researching the
topic and finding a plan that will please everyone.

The Freshman Representative (Ioiiiicil spent last
semester gauging student opinion and gathering sig.
natures from students who want a break.

Plans in the past have called for extending the
Thanksgiving break into a full week. .'\nioli said
administrators feared students would treat the week
like a spring hreak instead of focusing on .icadeiiiics.

\'111o|i said the 11111 plan prohah|1 would locus on
getting a lhiirsdi1 and 1 H1111 oll111l111'1'11111111'1111
week to give studtiits a loiii 11.11 lilocls to use lor

studying.

He said midterm hreaks have helped reduce
dropout rates for new students and allow older stu»
dents more time to study for their advanced classes.

The problem will he in finding a time when extra
days can he added to the schedule to make up for the
vacation days.

“If you can convince (L'K's academic depart—
ments) to start a week earlier, then there's not prolv
lem with 11," (I111 said. “hut that will he hard to do."

.'\moli said his committee will look at other
schools around the country that have found a stic-
1'essfiil wa1s to implement the hreak. .'\inoli said he
also has talked to people w ho ha1 1' taken pl ans helorc
the Senate ( .oiincil he 'lore.
