Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Chester S. Grundy was born August 22, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky. He obtained his BA in Sociology from the University of Kentucky (UK) in 1969. During his time as an undergraduate at UK, he was a member of the Human Relations Club and helped establish the school's Black Student Union. From 1969 to 1971, he worked for the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. In 1971, he became a program coordinator for the UK Office of Minority Students Affairs. (In 2003, this office became the Office of Multicultural and Academic Affairs.) In 1978, he became the director of the Office of African American Student Affairs. Grundy founded and was first director of the UK Martin Luther King, Jr., Center in 1987. In 2012, as part of a large group of UK employees laid off, Grundy was let go from his position as Director. The layoff resulted in a public outcry against the university. In 2013, he accepted a two-year position as Senior Diversity Advisor to the Dean in the UK College of Medicine. He also served as Special Projects Coordinator for the UK Alumni Association. In addition to his work at UK, Grundy also co-founded the Lexington, Kentucky, Roots & Heritage Festival and served as co-chairperson of the Lexington, Kentucky, Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration planning committee.
- During his more than 40-year association with UK, Chester Grundy promoted and supported African American students' education and cultural diversity at the university through African and African American-focused music, art exhibitions, live performances, lectures, and film. He encouraged minority students to embrace and find strength in their cultural heritage and "injected black culture" into the predominantly white university (HistoryMakers website). He established the Spotlight Jazz Series (begun in 1979), bringing jazz legends to the school. In addition, Grundy actively participated in forums, conferences and events organized by national organizations such as the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS), the Association of Black Culture Center (ABCC), and the Southern Arts Federation (SAF).
- Grundy has received multiple honors and awards. He was one of the Kentucky delegates to the White House Conference on Families in 1980 and received the NAACP Community Service Award that same year. In 1987, he received the Evelyn Black Award presented to an outstanding black faculty or staff member by the UK black Student Union and the Berea College Service Award. In 2013, he was awarded the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission Outstanding Achievement in Human Rights Award and the Lifetime of Waging Peace Ward from the Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice. In 2016, he received the Milner Award for outstanding philanthropic and other contributions to the arts. The Milner Award is the most prestigious award in the suite of Kentucky Governor's Awards in the Arts. Grundy is married to Msiba Ann Grundy, who shared the 2016 Milner Award and the Waging Peace Award with her husband. They have two children.

Scope and Contents
Amateur film of three events: A performance by a group of musicians on a stage; a group of people sitting in a cafeteria; and a meeting and discussion in a classroom. The musical performance includes at least two guitarists and three percussionists. The meeting includes shots of individuals speaking at a podium and other people sitting in chairs listening to the speakers or speaking themselves. The same group of people are then filmed sitting in a wide circle, with individual people speaking and others listening. Several of the people in the meeting and discussion are smoking cigarettes. Much of the film is grainy, out of focus, or underexposed.
