Scouting report

A quick look at North Carolina's

their greatest weakness is pass

Carolina has any weaknesses.

that, their defense is a lot like

Perry Moss, UK assistant toot-

Perhaps Moss was a little hasty
in his assessment of the Tar

least one weakness.

Pass defense. North Carolina
doesn’t play it. The secondary
gave up 155 yards a game

And that’s exactly what North
Carolina will do, too. Coach Bill
Dooley wouldn't have it any other
way.

"As a team, you’re nothing it
you can’t run the football on an

opponent,” he said. "You’ve got

to be able to knock people down
and run over them. it’s a game
for men. You’ve got to out-tough
people to beat them."

Fullback Mlke Voight has been
knocking people down for four
years, setting an ACC career
rushing record of. 3,971 yards in
the process. He also tied a league
record with 42 career touch-
downs.

it one really wanted to be
cynical, he could say that the
Peach Bowl is not really big time
because it's not covered by any of
the three maior networks.
Something called Mizlou, an
independent company with a 150

television coverage.

And finally, the Peach Bowl
has never been able to attract

is anything but a good sports
town.

But these facts mean little to
the UK football pam and its fans.
For the Wildcats, the Peach Bowl
otters national television ex-
posure and lots of money (about
mama).

Followers of the Wildcats
seemed pleased with the club
being invited to the Peach Bowl.
They gobbled up about 10,000
tickets in less than two hours
(sorry, Rolling Stones). Another
5,000 tickets went to VIPs.

Several Atlanta hotels were
flooded with reservations from
Kentuckians within a few days.
”You people are incredible," said
one hotel manager, who had been
answering telephone requests all
night. ”We've never seen
anything like it."

And there are other reasons
why Kentucky is happy to be
going to Atlanta this New Year’s

For one thing, UK last went

With quarterback Babe Parilli

completing passes at will, UK

RAM THE TARHEEIS

Highstepping
UK’s band

By JAY BRUMFIELD
Kernel Reporter

The recent histories of the UK toot-
ball team and the UK ”Wildcat”
Marching Band read much the same
way. Although it could not happen
another way, it is fitting that both
groups’ tumarounds should culminate
with a Peach Bowl appearance.

In 1967, the band only had 69 mem-

‘ bers at the end of the season. Needless

to say, the band was not particularly
impressive. Most UK supporters
regarded the band as embarrassing to
the University, as was its football team.

William Harry Clarke was chosen to
direct the band in 1968. Clarke, who
came to the band from another position
in the College of Fine Arts, persuaded
120 students to join the group that year.

The band grew steadily under
Clarke’s direction and in 1974, it un-
veiled new uniforms, abandoning the
traditional military look in favor of the

Drum malor Jimmy Yeiser
(top) leads the band onto the
field for the halftime show.
Yeiser's five-year career as
drum malor will end at the
Peach Bowl.

Late in the fall. the weather
gets considerably colder and
the malorettes get cold on the
sidelines while waiting for the
shows to begin. The Wildcat
took pity on Joann Wynn (left)
and gave her a moment's
benefit of his thick fur coat.

The band lines up behind the
end tone (bottom) about eight
minutes before the end of the
half. There they wait and

the first stanu before taking
the field.

more ca ual ”Kentucky Colonel" style.
The flas y, new outfits were designed

by a com mittee of alumni and students.

and cost about $90 each, according to
Clarke.

This ason has established the band
as one f the nation’s top marching
units, Clarke said. “We've grown
steadily etterover the last few ears,
he said, "and have now reached the
point ere we can march with
anybody ”

Succesys has made Clarke’s annual
talent search for new musicians much
easier. '{We are now forced to turn
away ma ny quality musicians—we iust
don't hm": enough room for everyone

I

who wan to ioin,” he says.

Clarke and Assistant Director
Gordon H nderson are already working
to fill n t year’s limited vacancies.
They ha e a list of about 1,000 high
school rr usicians who might be in-
terested ‘n UK's program.

These students are invited to either
audition at UK in May or to submit a
tape recorded performance. The band's
recruiting is also aided by six
scholarships which total $3,000 yearly.
Private donors also contribute to the
band’s scholarship fund.

The band’s operation is funded by
both the Athletic Association and UK's
general fund. "We have the same
budget now as we did in 1969," Clarke
pointed out, "and while I'm not com-
plaining, our budget is very tight and
money is starting to become a real
problem."

Like the football team, the band
returns to campus in mid-August to
prepare for the upcoming season. Two-
a-day practices are generally held until
classes begin, with the band learning its
pre-game routine and familiarizing
itself with the first three or four shows.

Practice lasts for one hour a day after
classes begin. While there is a good deal
of laughter and general foolishness,

arches on Atlanta

very little time is wasted. Clarke said
he believes that the week preceding a
performance should be spent
"polishing” the routine.

The routine is marched again and
again, sometimes to a tape recording of
the music and sometimes with the band
playing.

The maiorettes’ routine is
choreographed by head maiorette
Linda Love, a senior from Oak Ridge,
Tenn.

Assistant Director Henderson
determines the flag positions on the
field, while Chan Shearear and Debbie
Stevens, the head "flag" two years ago,
handle the choreography.

Jimmie Yeiser, a forestry graduate
student from Utica, N.Y., has served as
the band’s drum major for the past five
years. Yeiser is leaving UK after this
semester, so the Peach Bowl will be his
final performance—at least he is
leaving in style.
