Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- According to their website, the Lexington Herald-Leader found its beginnings in the 1800s as two separate newspapers. The Lexington Herald was founded in 1870 while the Lexington Leader came into publication in 1888. In the year 1937, the owner of the Lexington Leader, John G. Stoll, purchased the Lexington Herald, only to sell the pair off to the Knight Newspapers company in 1973. Continued as separate entities, the two publications didn't fully merge until the beginning of 1983. This joint paper would then be acquired by the McClatchy Company in 2006, who maintains ownership today. The official mission statement of the Herald-Leader is as follows "We are committed to being Central and Eastern Kentucky's primary source of news, advertising, information and commentary with the highest standards of journalism and superior customer service. We endeavor to be a rewarding and caring employer and a force for positive change in the community."
