Collection Overview

Biography / History
The first masonic lodge for Black Kentuckians formed in 1850, with a group of men led by Jesse Meriweather and Reverend Bird Parker of Quinn Chapel AME and led by. At first, it was unsafe for a large gathering of Black men to meet at once in Kentucky, therefore the first lodge met in New Albany, Indiana. By 1854 the lodge had moved to a location on Walnut Street in Louisville. Today, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Kentucky has sixty-nine subordinate lodges throughout the state.
The Order of the Eastern Star is a worldwide fraternal organization that is open to both men and women. Membership, however, is open to men who are Masons and women who are the wives, daughter, sisters, of Masons. The fundamental principles of the Order are based on the teachings of the Bible, but the Order welcomes followers of all religions if they have a belief in a Supreme Being. The organization's stated purposes are: Charitable, Educational, Fraternal, and Scientific.
In 1885 the first chapter instituted of the Order of Eastern Star for African Americans was Queen Esther No. 1 in Washington D.C. In 1893, the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons in Kentucky, Charles Steele, in Georgetown, Kentucky, wrote a declaration that Adoptive Rites extended to mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters would enhance the Craft in the authority of Kentucky. In 1895, Prince Hall in Kentucky instituted a Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Under its current name, the Cecelia Dunlap Grand Chapter, Alpha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Jurisdiction of Kentucky, was chartered in 1922 in Midway, Kentucky. During its history, the Grand Chapter's dues have contributed to masonic relief funds and for a time to the operation of a Masonic Widows and Orphans Home in Buechel, Kentucky.
In 1895, there were eight Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated chapters in Kentucky, including Deborah No. 1 in Lexington, Kentucky. The first retained minutes for the Grand Chapter are from the Annual Communication in 1901. Dorcas Chapter No. 29, Lexington, Kentucky, is included as an existing chapter in those first minutes. As early as 1908, the "Colored Notes" section of the Lexington Leader newspaper listed Dorcas Chapter monthly meetings. Dorcas Chapter No. 29 produced three Grand Matrons: Sister Mary B. Jones, Bessie Ballard, and Willie M. Taylor. Past Matrons include Sisters Mary Edna Berry, Polly Hockers, Jean Higgins, and Billye M. Peeples.
On March 10th, 1978, the Cecelia Dunlap Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliate, Jurisdiction of Kentucky gave dispensation authorizing the institution of the Heroines of Jericho for the state. The Heroines of Jericho is a degree conferred by Royal Arch Masons, their wives, mothers, widows, sisters, and daughters. Work toward the degree shares the Masonic purpose of promoting friendship and charity, relieving suffering, and promoting moral, social, spiritual, and intellectual self-improvement. Knights and Heroines have contributed to relief funds and paid dues to the Prince Hall, Jurisdiction of Kentucky. Clubs held the first meeting, like the Horeb Cyrus Club in 1979, and then the Omega Grand Court formed in 1980.
Billye Susan Morrow Peeples, born March 8, 1947, is a Past Most Ancient Matron for Order of Eastern Star, Heroines of Jericho, Omega Grand Court a part of Kentucky's Masonic Prince Phillip Hall. Peeples grew up in Lynch, Kentucky, the U.S. Coal and Coke Company (a subsidiary of U.S. Steel) coal company town. Her father, William Morrow, was a Second War World veteran and coal miner, and her mother, Dorothy L. Woods Morrow, was a head nurse at Lynch Medical Center and the first African American woman on the Lynch City Council. Billye Peeples moved to Lexington, Kentucky in the mid 1960s. She has one son, Porter Peeples, Jr. In Lexington, Ms. Peeples is a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

She has served as Past Worthy Matron and Past District Deputy Grand Matron within the Order of Eastern Star. She served as Past Ancient Matron and Past Most Ancient Grand Matron within Heroines of Jericho.
