Conservation Committee Meeting
Of the various reports of readings discussed at the March 8 g
" lmeeting of the Conservation Committee, one of the most helpful 2
T to the Committee in organizing a planning document was Judy :
Sackett's summary of the Cornell University disaster of 1970. n g
Seven inches of standing water`damaged 4,200 volumes of they -
Cornell collection. The disaster made Cornell aware of the 5
necessity of planning for emergencies, because: _ 3
l. There was no single individual at the University 5
· available and equipped to deal with this type of g
emergency. ?
V · 2. There was no formal plan for emergencies.
3. There was no easily obtainable source of information i
on dealing with the emergency. _
l . 4. There was no list of names of building and maintenance T
personnel from whom to obtain equipment to perform · g
emergency services (such as removal of the standing 3
g water). ·
5. Extra personnel had to be found and hired for salvage E
work. -
