Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- In the mid-1770s, James French (1756-1835), a surveyor, attorney, and veteran of the Revolutionary War, came to the western part of the Commonwealth of Virginia to survey the land. Between 1776 and 1783, he resided in Boonesboro, the town which he laid out. James French married Keziah Calloway (1769-1845), daughter of Colonel Richard Calloway, and eventually settled in Montgomery County on a farm five miles from Mt. Sterling. Together, they had nine children: William French (1785-1863), Catherine French (b. 1789), Richard French (1792-1854), Susannah French (1795-1866), Stephen French (1798-1827), Theodosia French (1801-1886), Keziah French (1804-1827), Mary T. French (1805-1886), and Livia French (1806-1826). One of their sons, Richard French, was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1820 and practiced law in Covington and Winchester. He married Mary Taliafero (1805-1886). Richard French served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1820-1826 and as a judge of the circuit court in 1829. A Jacksonian Democrat, he served three non-consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1835-1837, 1843-1845, and 1847-1849). In addition, he was an unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1840. He died in Covington, Kentucky, in 1854. Mary and Richard French had six children: James H. French (1823-1900), Charles Stephen French (1828-1905), Mary Elizabeth French (1834-1906), Ann Calloway French (1839-1865), William French, and Richard French, Jr. (1842-1914). Charles Stephen French, who married Margaret Moore, became an attorney and served as a judge of the Common Pleas Court covering central Kentucky. Richard French, Jr., who was a merchant and a Baptist minister, married Mary Taylor Parrish (1856-1952). They had Julia French (1877-1963), who married Rufus John Williams (1853-unknown); Mary Calloway French (1880-1914), who married Henry Carlyle Besuden (1880-about 1905); Elizabeth Dudley French (1881-1955); James Hay French (1885-1984), who married Jennie Judy Ratliff (1897-1950); and William Parrish French (1888-1972), who married Patsy Pichrell.
- Scope and Content
- The French family papers (dated 1770-1979, undated; 9.88 cubic feet; 27 boxes, 1 item) primarily comprises correspondence, financial records, land surveys, legal documents, political documents, and photographs from James French, Richard French, Julia French Williams, James Hay French, and Jennie Judy Ratliff. These papers document the surveying of rural Kentucky plots, the legal and political business of a Kentucky lawyer, and 20th century social dynamics.
- While these papers include family materials spanning the period of 1776-1970, they focus on materials generated by the immediate family of James French (1756-1835) and of his son Richard French (1792-1854). The papers of James French include correspondence, financial accounts and receipts, land and surveying documents, treasury warrants, and legal documents. Richard French’s papers dated 1812-1850 contain family and slave correspondence; letters to his wife, Mary Taliafero French, from his time spent in Washington, D. C.; financial accounts and receipts; promissory notes; land surveys; legal agreements and depositions; political circulars and pamphlets; and campaigning correspondence and speeches. Correspondents writing to Richard French include: William S. Botts, Brutus J. Clay, Green Clay, William Ficklin, Thomas H. Hazelrigg, E. H. Herndon, William Hunt, Thomas January, Madison Johnson, William Johnson, Thomas Jouett, Amos Kendall, John Lapsley, John McCalla, Samual Pack, G. E. Russel, Achilles Sneed, John Stevenson, William Suggett, Jr., Robert Trimble, Robert Wickliffe, and Oliver Wolcott. The content of these letters are concerning politics, patronage and appointments, legislations, and business affairs. Additionally, there is a large collection of correspondence to Jennie Judy Ratliff, dating from 1906-1916 , which records her early social life. The French family collection also contains letters, diplomas, drawings, genealogical materials, horse pedigrees, post cards, and newspaper clippings. The series of photographs contains over five hundred photographs, most of which are unidentified people and places. Of the photographs that are identified, many of people and places depicted are French family members and friends from about 1890-1950, including James Hay French, Mary Calloway French, Julia French, Henry Carlisle Besuden, Richard French, William Timberlake, and James William Parrish.
