- Biography / History
- Lawless T. Thompson (1896-1972) was born in Horse Cave, Kentucky to John D. Thompson (1857-1911) and Cora L. Wheeler (1870-1959). In 1922, he married Margaret Earl Smith (1898-1983) and together they had three children, Margaret Ann (1923-1987), Lawless Jr. (1932-1961), and Alice (b. 1929). The Thompson family eventually settled in Anchorage, Kentucky where Lawless worked as a teacher.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Lawless T. Thompson family letters (dated 1922-1945, undated; 0.13 cubic feet; 3 folders, 1 item) comprise letters and a photograph that document the lives of the members of Lawless Thompson's family in Kentucky in the mid-twentieth century. The letters are primarily sent from Lawless to his wife, in which he discusses their upcoming wedding, traveling for work, buying gifts for holidays, finding accommodations in cities, his personal health, duties at work, running into friends, and his concerns for her health. Other letters include ones sent to their daughter, discussing daily life, summer camp reunions, trips taken by friends, school, music, summer jobs, participating in sports, and the weather. The one photograph is of an unidentified young woman.
- The Lawless T. Thompson family letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
