The national organization began in 1911 as the American Association for Organizing Charity. It promotes communication among social work agencies. The Family Service of Lexington and Fayette County was devoted to fostering and promoting the development of wholesome family life and citizenship through social services. The agency worked with families in the county who were experiencing financial, relationship, and health hardship. Some families were offered counseling and others were provided with aid for their time of need. The Family Service of Lexington and Fayette County was absorbed by other social service agencies in Fayette County by the mid 1960s.
