In 1942, Kingsbury joined the staff of WLW Radio as an assistant editor in the newsroom. In 1944, he was promoted to editor. Ten years later in 1963, Kingsbury was appointed as Crosley's vice-president in charge of news operations. He left his position with Crosley a year later to accept a post as Deputy Commissioner to Kentucky Highway Commissioner, Henry Ward. It was not his first experience in state government. Kingsbury was actively involved in promoting Democratic party candidates both statewide and in his native Northern Kentucky. He participated in the successful gubernatorial campaigns of Bert Combs and Edward T. Breathitt.
