- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The C.H. Garland travel diaries (dated 1900-1901; 0.2 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprise three travel diaries belonging to a young woman from Boston named C.H. Garland and her unnamed travel companion. The first diary covers Garland's trip in the Western United States and her trip to Canada. She drove from Boston to Chicago and then from Chicago to Portland. From Portland she traveled by steamboat up the coast of British Columbia. Her diary details the landscape, the hotels they stayed in, and their meals. Garland visited the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park on her trip out West, and she included a list of birds and plants she saw. The back of the western travel diary contains a list of the travel expenses and totals spent. The two other diaries in the collection describe Garland's and her travel partner's trip to Europe. These two diaries cover the same trip, but offer two different perspectives. They sailed on the S.S. Commonwealth out of Boston to Liverpool in 1901 and visited England, Holland, Italy, and France. While in Europe they did many tourist activities such as bicycling, shopping, attending Church, and visiting museums.
- The C.H. Garland travel diaries are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
